E-mail Survival Guide

Learn more about how Thunderbird can help you manage your e-mail starting with some of the advanced features of Thunderbird. Advanced Search features will help you find specific messages you’re looking for and Filters will sort and file new messages as they come in. At the risk of being diagnosed with a multiple personality disorder we’ll discuss multiple identities. To keep things interesting we’ll show you how to jazz up your signature. And that annoying Super-User? We’ll reveal who it is and how to end those weekly messages.


Using FileMaker Pro

This class provides an introduction and overview for working with an existing FileMaker Pro database. Topics include adding and modifying records, finding information and sorting the database.

This class will be taught using FileMaker Pro 10. If you do not have FileMaker Pro 10, please contact us for other training options.


FileMaker Pro Databases (3-part)

Day 1: This session covers the basics of database design. You'll learn
how to develop a database from scratch, create different types of fields for data entry, and create relationships and links between files.

Day 2: Layouts and reports allow you to organize, manipulate and report out your data. This session will focus on using the screen design tools in FileMaker to create data entry forms and other type of reports.

Day 3: This session will focus on how and when to use related data to
create more powerful reports and layouts. Advanced layout topics such as adding buttons for automation and printing controls will be discussed as well.

Prerequisite: A good working knowledge of FileMaker Pro.

FileMaker Pro Advanced Layout and Scripts

Ready to move beyond the basics with your FileMaker Pro database? In this workshop, we'll take a clinic approach to look at different techniques for improving layouts in your existing database and adding automation through scripts. Specific topics covered will be determined by YOUR projects.

Prerequisite: A good working knowledge of FileMaker Pro and a specific project.


Photoshop Elements

This class is an introduction to this Photoshop spin-off. Elements, a scaled-down version of Photoshop, is aimed at digital photographers and non-professional Web designers. Learn how to work with digital pictures for the Web or print.


Intro to Photoshop (2-part)

Create high-impact images on your computer. Edit and enhance images for your Web pages. Learn to use the current version of the most popular image editing software package on the market today, Adobe Photoshop.

Session 1 will introduce you to basic color correction, image cropping, using filters, simple layering techniques and transformation essentials for images. Creating images from scratch using the paint tool, applying gradients, and Photoshop text will also be covered.

Session 2 will cover more advanced topics, including masking techniques, image composits, adjustment layers, and preparing images for print and screen-based outputs.

WebDisk Basics

Where should I keep my data files? Can I access them from off-campus? Can I easily share documents with others? If you've asked yourself any of these questions, then WebDisk, L&C's web-based storage solution, may be the answer for you. This class will teach you the basics of using WebDisk to store and share files.


MeetingMaker

This class is designed to help faculty and staff learn to use MeetingMaker. Learn about calendar views, types of meetings, adding new activities, private vs. public activities, activity vs. meeting, sharing your calendar with others, and more.


InDesign (3-part)

Go beyond your word processor into the world of page layout. If you are creating a newsletter, guide, program, or flier (just a few examples), you'll definately want to explore the world of Adobe InDesign. These hands-on sessions use a simple newsletter project in order to help you explore a variety of InDesign skills. If you are a PageMaker user, this may be a class for you since PageMaker is no longer supported by Adobe.

Beginning PowerPoint (2-part)

PowerPoint is a presentation creation program that is part of the Microsoft Office suite. It is rapidly gaining in popularity on the LC campus and has long been a favorite tool in the business world. This hands-on class presents the basic information necessary to create your own presentations for screen or print. We will use PowerPoint 2007 for Windows.

This is a beginner's class.

Working with PDFs

In this class we’ll cover the basics of working with PDFs in Acrobat 8 Professional. Learn how to combine PDFs together, perform minor edits and add headers, footers and watermarks. We’ll also cover adding security to your PDF documents and useful utilities such as the Typewriter tool.


Creating PDF Forms

PDFs are ideally suited for distributing forms, however, increasingly people are no longer satisfied with simply printing out and completing PDF forms manually. In this class you’ll learn how to use Acrobat Professional to design forms that can be completed electronicallywith the free Reader program, as well as Acrobat, then printed or saved and emailed.


Web Publishing 101 (3-part)

Day 1: Planning and Basic HTML: Before creating your website, some planning must take place. This topic will be explored as you begin plans for your website. Then learn the basics of HTML .

Day 2: Assembling the content and using Photoshop Elements: Gathering the necessary content (text and graphics) for your pages is the next step. Then, you’ll get an introduction to using Photoshop Elements as the primary tool we use to prepare images for the web.

Day 3: Dreamweaver: Finally, you’ll learn how to make the webpage creation process easier by using Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver is the primary tool we use to combine content into individual “pages” and make them live on the Internet.

Pick up tips on tasks you may already know how to do and learn a few new things while you’re there. We will use Excel 2007 for Windows.

How to choose, create and customize charts in Excel. We will use Excel 2007 for Windows.

Prerequisite: A good working knowledge of Excel.


Avoiding Catastrophe with Backups

If your project files, lecture notes, or any other vital data live only on your local computer, you are one hard drive crash away from losing it all. In this workshop we’ll discuss what you should be backing up then review software options for both Macs and PCs to help you manage backups. With your files backed up you’ll barely bat an eye when your hard drive crashes.

Scanning

Scanned images make excellent additions to your Web pages, presentations or papers. This session takes you through the basics of scanning photos and slides.

What's New with FileMaker 10

We think FileMaker 10 is the most exciting FileMaker release since the jump from version 6 to 7. As an extra bonus, if you're already using FileMaker 7 or higher, there's no need for a complicated conversion of existing databases. Come and get a peek at the redesigned and easier to use interface and explore some of the new features such as saved finds, script triggers and dynamic reports. We'll also take a look at some of the features introduced in version 8 & 9 that are not covered in our regular FileMaker training workshops such as Conditional Formatting, Auto Complete and the FileMaker Web Viewer.

This is a 2-part workshop for those who have a working knowledge of Photoshop and would like to delve deeper. We'll learn to use some of the more advanced tools and photo retouching techniques used by professionals to create high-quality images and posters. If you've ever wanted to learn more about layers, cutting out portions of images, or how to use the cloning tool, this workshop is for you.

Intermediate PowerPoint

Learn some tricks for adding extra pizaz to your presentations. We will explore custom animations, work with graphics and discuss techniques for using PowerPoint for various projects.
