THE COURSE:

Welcome to the Russian Language! This course covers the fundamentals of Russian through  speaking, listening, reading and writing. Basic vocabulary and grammatical structures of Russian are practiced orally and in writing. Emphasis is on correct pronunciation and language usage in practical conversation and simple writing assignments. Aspects of traditional and contemporary Russian culture are incorporated. Classes with Prof. Osipovich meet three times per week, and you are required to meet one additional hour per week for drill and/or conversation session with a Fulbright Language Assistant (time - TBA) or upper-level students of Russian. Also, you have to work with the audio materials related to the textbook Начало on your own, either in the W. M. Keck Interactive Learning Center (Miller Bld, second floor) or on your own computer. Significant progress in Russian  can be made if  you apply yourself consistently and conscientiously to your language learning every day, even if there is no class that day.

MATERIALS:

1. Начало (Book One), second edition, 2002; Workbook and Laboratory Manual to accompany Начало textbook. See the publisher's web site for the textbook here.

2. Audio Materials to accompany Начало (available on the the ILC Moodle files: http://moodle.lclark.edu: login with your LC user name and password; click on the category "foreign languages;" find and select the course called "ILC-Interactive Learning Center" -- explore!

REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING:

Attendance in class, in drill/conversation session and work on audio materials (either at your place or in the W.M. Keck's ILC) is crucial to acquiring and practicing language skills. In case of unavoidable absences you must try to notify the instructor ahead of time.

All homework is to be turned in at the end of each class. Keep all your returned corrected homework in chronological order in a binder, so that you are able to access it easily for your review.

We will have a small vocabulary quiz (5-10 min. long) almost every week, a test after each unit (vocabulary, grammar, phraseology, etc.) and a final.

An approximation of grading for your performance in this class is: homework (20%); class & drill/conversation session participation (20%); quizzes & tests (40%); final exam (20%)

THE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION IN RUSSIA (Праздник Нового года в России).

Russians love the New Year holiday (Новый год). You can read about their New Year tradition (новогодняя традиция) here. As some of you know, the most popular song (песня) for this holiday is a children's song "В лесу родилась ёлочка" (V lesu rodilas yelochka). Every Russian knows it. It is something that no winter holiday can do without. You can read the text of the song and its translation here ; listen to the song here and here . Maybe you are intersted in watching a cartoon about the New Year Tree -- then click here. See some fun videos on "youtube:" Baba Yaga and Ded Moroz and Grey Wolf
