Spanish Placement Test (SPT)

TheSPT is an online (Moodle based) test used to place students from beginning to advanced Spanish levels: 101-301.

Contents: 62 multiple-choice questions.  

Duration: Up to 60 minutes (varies according to the ability or level of each student.)

Validity: SPT results are valid for one year. The SPT can only be taken once per calendar year (you may not take it multiple times to improve your level.)

You may not take the SPT if you are enrolled in a Spanish course at LC. This is not a challenge test.

Before taking the test

1. You will need a Lewis and Clark E-mail Account

2. You must use FireFox as a browser, not optional. Browser and system requirements.

3. You must review a brief Moodle tutorial.

WHO NEEDS TO TAKE THE SPT?

  1. Students who have studied Spanish before and are not transferring any credits.
  2. Students with prior experience in Spanish (living in a Hispanic country, etc.)
  3. Students who have studied more than one language for which we give the Foreign Language Placement test, if they would like to study both of them at LC. They must take the placement test in one of the languages and then contact a professor in the Foreign Languages Department for individualized placement into the second language.

WHO DOES NOT NEED TO TAKE THE SPT?

  1. Students who have never studied Spanish before (they must take SPAN 101)
  2. Students who have fulfilled the Foreign Language requirement because of an AP (Advanced Placement Language) Examination score of 4, 5 or an IB (International Baccalaureate Higher Level Language Examination) score of 5, 6, or 7, and have received the credits from the Registrar's Office at LC.
  3. Students who have studied another foreign language (e.g., Italian), and do not plan to take Spanish.
  4. Transfer students who have studied Spanish at the college level elsewhere, have transferred credits to LC,and have received the corresponding credits from the Registrar's Office for those courses. In that case, students should continue with the next course according to the Registrar's Office requirements.
