When the school first began in Albany, the Albany College nickname was the Pirates. There were several different logo renderings for the Pirates, most involving a pirate ship. When the College moved north and became Lewis & Clark College, the athletics mascot was changed to the Pioneers.
Throughout the years, the rendering of the logo has mainly been nothing more than an L and a C. The only pictorial representation of "Pioneers" has been a character named Pioneer Pete. Pioneer Pete appeared in artwork and in human form, with a Pioneer Pete who patrolled the sidelines dressed in frontiersman's attire, complete with a coonskin cap and a musket on his shoulder.
Team uniforms have also varied with how Pioneers and Lewis & Clark have been conveyed. A scripting of either Pioneers or Lewis & Clark have been the most common representations.
In recent times, football helmets have had the most variations on the Pioneer theme and have included the only modern attempt at coming up with a graphic representation of a Pioneer.In the first step of the logo redesign, an ampersand was added to the mark. This was an important point of emphasis as it is Lewis & Clark College, not Lewis Clark.
