Spring sailing has started and the weather is only getting better.
Jackson Alexander JV Regatta
October 29th, 2009
The Pio's participated in PSU's Jackson Alexander JV Regatta over the weekend of the 24-25. The competition was very tight with several teams leapfrogging each other throughout the day on Saturday. Two brand new sailors got out on the water as crew and one regular crew got a change to try her hand at skippering. We showed a lot of improvement, including a second place finish (of 13), even though there were only a total of 10 races. Wind conditions on Sunday meant an early end to the regatta.
North/North
October 17-18, 2009
Four veteran sailors drove up to Seattle this weekend for North/North. Day one was an interesting day. The rain that came down in the morning was hard enough to discourage some of the most enthusiastic sailors, however it subsided and a shifty, puffy southerly filled in ranging from 5 up to 12 knots with gusts up to 20. Someone up there did not like B fleet, because when they left the dock it would rain and the wind would die. However, they did get to experience a double rainbow that rapped all the way around the boats so that it looked like it the bottom of the boat was the proverbial “end of the rainbow”. The sun did make a few brief appearances mostly when A fleet was on the water. Day two looked promising to start with three races in A in a light, 5 knot southerly, which quickly died and left B fleet to sit on glassy waters.
Stoney Bruke
October 10-11, 2009
The Pio's drove all the way down to Sunny San Fransico over fall break for Berkeley’s Stoney Bruke Intersectional. Clipper Cove, basically under I-80, saw a great first day of racing. The first race was sailed in a 6-9 knot oscillating breeze, one of the more challenging wind patterns that frequent Treasure Island. The wind filled in a north-westerly direction and slowly moved west throughout the first four rotations with only slight alterations to the course. From the 4th race during the second rotation, the breeze picked up to 15 knots and by the end of the day reached 20 knots with gusts even higher. This amount of wind prevented our young sailors from competing which meant quite a few DNS’s(Did Not Sail). B Division completed 6 races and A Division completed 8 races by the end of the day at 6:00pm. The courses were windward/leeward with an offset and leeward gate. This is a type of course that our team has not had much practice with and hand some trouble getting used to it. Sunday started with 10-12 knots, gradually dying as the day went on. The highlight of the trip may have been the wild Salmon dinner cooked by team captain Evan Carmean’s cousin and aunt. But the sailing was pretty great too.
Single Hands Competition
October 5th, 2009
The Pio's were represented on beautiful Bellingham Bay over the weekend of the 26-27 of September. One sailor was able to compete on our wonderful but as of yet, unnamed laser. Other LC sailors were eager join but unable due to lack of transportation. The sailors were out on the water for a total of eleven hours over two days. The wind was between five and fifteen knots.
