1940s
Karen Lafky Nygaard '48 attended her 50th class
reunion last summer and misses all those who did not
attend.
1950s
Marcia Lyslo Bement '53 retired from Bio Electric
Corp. Her husband passed away in May 1998. The memorial was
June 13, 1998, at First Presbyterian Church in Portland.
Merilyn Coulter Carroll '53 and Richard Carroll '55
reside at Summerplace in Portland. Richard continues to
work part time as an insurance agent; he is
semi-retired.
Robert Hawkins '53 retired last year. He spends
his time playing golf and raising bonsai trees in
Morgantown, W.Va. He has two grandchildren.
JoAnn Alfson Houf '53 will celebrate the 50th
anniversary of the Alpha Gamma Sorority's annual "birds"
party this summer at a mountain cabin in California.
Ronald Useldinger '54 is finishing his 30th year
as chief executive officer and president of the Fitness
Motivation Institute of America. He lives in Scott's Valley,
Calif.
James Petersen '56 is retiring after 31 years as
pastor of Southminster Presbyterian Church in Beaverton.
Herman Welch '56 was appointed to a seat on the
Waldport City Council in February 1998. Herman had been
serving as a citizen's representative on the Waldport sewer
rates and budget committees.
Thomas J. Harrison '57 and Viola M. Russell Harrison
'59 are living in Anchorage. Viola obtained her Ph.D. in
1992 and is currently an associate professor at the
University of Alaska teaching writing. Tom is an
ophthalmologist with a sub-specialty in vitreo-retinal
diseases and surgery. He is in his 31st year of practice.
They have three grown children: Trevor, Rebecca, Nathan, and
two grandchildren. They enjoy skiing, hiking, boating, and
camping.
Willard Bone '58 is president and owner of AMS
International Inc. His business has recently expanded to
include an office in Santiago, Chile. He lives and works in
Camp Sherman with his wife, Christine.
Ruth Breckenridge Hughes '58 was recently
interviewed by Portland local news because she taught
eighth-grade science to astronaut John Glenn.
1960s
Patricia Imlay Dannen '60 has been a college
counselor at Westview High School in Portland since
1994.
Carolee Weiss Fugate '60 was elected treasurer of
the Ohio Business Teachers Association at last fall's
convention in Toledo. She coordinates cooperative business
education at Tolles Technical Center in Plain City, Ohio,
where she has lived since 1980.
Monty E. Vincent '60, who lives in Ann Arbor,
Mich., sold his company to Whatman PLC of England and plans
to retire this year. The company is a worldwide supplier of
medical and scientific filters developed and manufactured in
Ann Arbor.
Sylvan Maynard Beierl '61 works as a project
administrator at American Power Conversion. She lives in
Providence, R.I.
Linda Brown Knepper '61 and Wayne Knepper '61 live
in Portland. In March 1998, Wayne retired after 32 years
teaching high-school business education for Portland Public
Schools.
Katherine Kaady Saba '61 has lived all over the
United States with her husband, who is in the hotel
business. She sold real estate, managed commercial property,
and for the last 12 years, has administered facility
services for a large corporation in Atlanta. Recently,
Katherine co-published Ethnic Edibles , a cookbook for her
church. For the past two years, she has appeared on the
"Peachtree Morning" television show demonstrating recipes
from the book. Katherine lives in Norcross, Ga.
Nancy Reinhardt Chinn '62 is the author of Spaces
for Spirit: Adorning the Church (Liturgy Training
Publications, Chicago) which includes more than 60 color
photographs of her visual art for liturgical spaces. In
addition, she wrote inspirational words for churches wishing
to add visual elements to worship, and had included many
practical suggestions for beginning this ministry. Nancy's
work has been commissioned throughout the world. She lives
in Oakland, Calif., and teaches art and spirituality in
seminaries on both coasts.
Karen Galbraith Hicks '63 was a librarian and
archivist for Clackamas Community College in Oregon City and
now works as a public services librarian at Concordia
University in Portland.
Chuck Starr '63 was awarded the Educational
Excellence Award, sponsored by the University of Oregon
College of Education Alumni Society in April 1998. The award
recognizes his leadership in developing the Morrow County
School District's comprehensive evaluation program,
developing programs for academically gifted and at-risk
students, and for developing a plan to meet district needs
through a multi-million dollar bond levy.
J. Willard Hayden '66 is the president of the
Salem branch of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays
(PFLAG).
Kevin Marshall '66 is a member of the Dallas,
Ore., city council. He owns and manages of the Cynthian
Café.
Judy Brown Scheideman '66 presented her artwork at
a glass and fiber show, "Fusion" at the Columbia Art Gallery
in Hood River in May 1998.
Vi Sweany Watson '66, M.A. '70 is a drama teacher
at Sam Barlow High School in Gresham. Vi recently directed
16 students in Many Strong and Beautiful Women: A
Celebration of the Lives of Women, Past and Present,
featuring the work of women writers. The show portrayed a
woman's life from adolescence to maturity.
Georgiana Kugle '67 celebrated her fifth
anniversary as pastor of the New Life Presbyterian Church in
Omaha, Neb.
Patrick Borunda '68 is a director for the Portland
Branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco,
reporting on the rapidly changing tribal economies. He also
advises the Native American Business Network, a Portland
nonprofit organization that fosters native American private
enterprise. The network has trained thousands in business
basics and helped start more than 200 businesses through
classes adapted to Native American values, small-loan
programs and reservation-based, high-tech business
centers.

Clifford Harris '68 has continued his education by
dabbling in political science and teaching. His work paid
off 10 years ago, with a winning debut on the game show
"Jeopardy." Clifford lives in Albuquerque, N.M.
Katherine Lewellen '68 and Dale Wetsig were
married Dec. 27, 1997 at Chapel of Grace in Olympia, Wash.
They live in Tumwater, Wash.
Carol Gregory Clay '69 is the chief executive
officer for her business, Babies on the Go, a baby equipment
rental business in Portland.
Francis Keesling '69 has retired from Pacific
Bell. He and Arlene Bruhn were married Sept. 11, 1997.
Arlene is an accountant. They live in Sonoma, Calif.
1970s
Stephanie Zirko Edwards '70 and William Edwards
'71 are living in Casper, Wyo. Stephanie works as a
computer network administrator at Kelley Walsh High School.
William is vice president of the Casper Area Economic
Development Alliance.
Katherine Keefer '70 in collaboration with her
husband, Steve Gillman, dedicated a large sculpture, the
California Veteran's Memorial, on Dec. 12, 1998, in State
Capitol Park, Sacramento, Calif.
James Robinson '70 became superintendent of
Lebanon Community School District on July 1, 1998. He was
formerly superintendent of Reedsport School District.
Mary Ann Deffenbaugh '71 and Rod Pulliam '72 own
the Pulliam Deffenbaugh Gallery in Portland's Pearl
District. They celebrated the 10-year anniversary of the
gallery in May 1998.
Rose-Mary Fishback Pearson '71 lives in Portland
with her husband, Chester. She is a minister at First
Christian Church and works with the Portland board of the
Community Concert Association.
Chareeratana "Charee" Thiengthamch Crow '72 and Gerald
W. Crow Jr. '74 finished a nine-year project of
translating the New Testament into the Thai language in
August 1998. They live in Lake Oswego.
Judith Aiello '73 quit her business, Aiello
Design, and started a new job as men's visual merchandiser
for three Nordstrom stores in the Portland area.
Beverly Byer '73 began anchoring the 5 p.m. news
at KION Channel 46, a CBS affiliate in Salinas, Calif. in
May 1998. Beverly previously worked as news anchor for rival
station KSBW-TV.
James Miller '74 is president and chief operating
officer of Kemper Reinsurance. He lives in Lake Zurich,
Ill., with his wife, Colleen.
Cathryn "Kate" Moitoret '74 was involved in a
collision with a truck in November 1998. She suffered
serious injuries and is currently at a hospital in Colorado.

Larry Olson '74 was named featured artist at the
Lake Oswego Festival of Arts in June 1998 for his book of
photographs. Oregon Rivers (Westcliffe Publishers,

Timothy Peterson '75 and Deborah Beckwith
Peterson '76 live in Canton, Ohio. Both work at Malone
College; Deborah is an instructor in humanities, and Timothy
is a professor of sociology. Timothy will take a sabbatical
this spring in Washington, D.C., and will write an
environmental studies tract for the American Studies
Program.
Edward Sarrett '75 lives in San Jose, Calif., with
his wife, Rosa. Edward is currently in his 21st year of
teaching at Bellarmine College Preparatory in San Jose. He
teaches French.
Ronald Wo '75 leads the Hawaii Community
Foundation as chairman of the board of governors. The
foundation has more than $200 million in charitable assets
and makes annual grants of about $10 million to non-profit
organizations. Ronald is director of real estate for
Foodland Supermarkets/Food Pantry Ltd.
Linda Austin '76 spent two months in the spring of
1998 in Mexico City in a choreographer's residency supported
by the U.S./Mexico Culture Fund. She lives and works in
Portland after 22 years in New York City.
Hal D. Hiemstra '76 has joined the government
relations group at Ball Janik LLP as a government relations
consultant in the firm's Washington, D.C., office. He will
continue to focus his work on transportation policy, natural
resource issues and community development.
Laura Wetzig Hitch '77 completed her doctorate in
psychiatric nursing at Case Western Reserve University in
Cleveland. She is also the mother of two boys. ages 6 and
4.
Steve Hurlbut '77 spent 10 years overseas with the
Peace Corps, first as a volunteer, then as assistant
director. He recently received his MBA from the University
of Utah and is working toward his CPA certification. He is
assistant professor of management at Westminster College in
Salt Lake City.
Elizabeth Warren Mcallester '77 and Jeff Mcallester
'77 are parents of Brooke, born in April 1996. They live
in Welches.
Joseph Panowicz '77 and his wife, Carol, have two
children, Zachary Edward, born Dec. 31, 1994, and Nicole
Marie, born Jan. 8, 1998. They live in Portland.
Jim Torgerson '77, M.A. '95 became the interim
principal of the 650-student Chehalem Valley Middle School
in McMinnville this year. Jim had been assistant principal
at the school since 1996. As principal, his duties have
shifted from student management to instructional leadership
for the 62-member staff.
Darryl Vhugen '77 and his wife, Jann, are the
parents of Natasha, born Sept. 19, 1998. They live in
Seattle.
Chester Wrucke '77 and his wife, Rebecca, have two
children, Chester (10) and Catherine (8). They live in
Rohnert Park, Calif.
Mary (Couche) Norton '78 and her husband, Ernie,
are parents of Kiana Mary, born Nov. 12, 1998. She joins
brother Charles (8) and sister Margaret (3). They live in
Kotzebue, Alaska.
Mark Davis '79 joined the Western Region Real
Estate division of Bank One as a vice president in the
Commercial Real Estate Group. Mark lives in Denver.
JoAnn Ngan Lee '79 lives in Portland with her
husband, Lester. JoAnn was recently promoted to assistant
financial analyst with the City of Portland.
Ralph Smith '79 is the operations manager for the
National Resources Production Company (NRPC) in Cocoa, Fla.
He and his wife, Jerri, have three children.
