Julia Duin '78 of Falls Church, Va., published her
third book in May 1998. Waiting for True Love
(Chariot/Victor Books) is a children's book of six
19th-century fairy tales that focus on virtues.

Carmen Rivadeneyra Swigart M.A.T. '74 was elected
to a four-year term on the Cannon Beach city council. She
owns and operates Sea Ranch Resort in Cannon Beach. Carmen
is a native of Peru.
Verna Bailey M.E. '79 is featured in a recent book
titled The Band Played Dixie: Race and the Liberal
Conscience at Ole Miss by Nadine Cohodas (Free Press, 1997).
The book details the history of black students at the
University of Mississippi. In 1965 Verna was the first black
woman to attend the university. She is the principal of
Cedar Park Middle School in Beaverton.
Mike Mills M.A. '84 is the new elementary
principal at Imbler Elementary School in Imbler. Mike
previously taught health, career education and speech at
Imbler High School for seven years. He also served as the
high school's head boys basketball coach for six years. He
will step down as the basketball coach but will become the
high school's athletic and activities director.
Julie Chamberlain-Bickle M.A. '86 was one of eight
high school art teachers who accepted an invitation to show
her work at the FireHouse Gallery in Grants Pass. Julie is a
full-time art teacher at Hidden Valley High School.
Nicki Hudson M.A. '87 was named Teacher of the
Year at West Linn High School, where she has worked for nine
years.
Matt Love M.A.T. '88 teaches English and social
studies at Neskowin Valley Middle School. Matt is
responsible for coordinating science studies and physical
education activities.
A. Nikki Johnson M.A. '89 received an award for
excellence in addiction counselor education from the
Addiction Certification Board of Oregon.
Mark Burrows M.P.A. '94 is the principal at
Humbolt Elementary School in Canyon City. In May 1998 he
received his administrative license, which certified him to
be a principal.
Tracy McLellan M.A. '95 teaches a second/third
grade multi-age class at Chehalem Elementary School in
Beaverton.
Jane Mendenhall Smith M.A. '96 presented an organ
recital in February 1998 featuring works by Felix
Mendelssohn, Nicolas de Grigny, Domenico Scarlatti, Cesar
Franck and J.S. Bach. Jane is the organist at First United
Methodist Church in Newberg.
Linda Hill Hurley M.A. '97 serves as a counselor
at William Temple House and is a peer counselor with the Mt.
Hood Mental Health VIEWS program, where she counsels senior
adults with life adjustment issues such as housing
transitions, changing health and loss of loved ones.

I. Elaine Lyle Montgomery '36, July 1998.
Esther Lehrbas Harcourt '48, May 1, 1998, at age
102. She was raised in Wausau, Wis., and received a
teacher's diploma from Northwestern University in 1916. She
taught high school speech and drama in Chisholm, Minn. then
taught at Northwestern Universdity for three years. She
taught speech arts at Lewis & Clark from 1948 until she
retired in 1968.
John Reed Brewer '50, Nov. 4, 1998. He served in
the U.S. Army in Italy during World War II and was awarded a
Purple Heart. After the war, he moved to Portland and was a
music teacher in the Portland Public Schools for more than
30 years.

Robert M. Claunch Sr. '52, Oct. 18, 1998, of
cancer. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War
II. He was a buyer for Meier & Frank and Fred Meyer and
a manufacturer's representative and store owner of True
Value Hardware.
Rosemary Stevens '57, Nov. 11, 1998, of breast
cancer.
Richard Marshall Brown '67, Nov. 28, 1998.
Constance L. Nesbitt '68, Jan. 10, 1998, of
cancer. She worked at St. Joseph Community Hospital and at
Vancouver Veterans Hospital in the drug and alcohol
rehabilitation unit. Later, she was a director of social
work, and finally, manager of Kaiser Permanente's Rockwood
and Cascade Park medical clinics. She lived in Vancouver,
Wash.
Robert Wilson '69, Nov. 2, 1998. He was a teacher,
coach and administrator for Portland Public Schools for 29
years.
George Wightman Cowan '71, Feb. 8, 1998, of
cancer. He was a broadcast technician for KOIN-TV for about
25 years.
Sandra Puncsak Dunn M.E. '74, March 14, 1998, of
liver disease. Sandra was a marketing and communications
executive. She most recently was director of the New
Cleveland Campaign for the Cleveland (Ohio) Chamber of
Commerce and assisted in the opening of the Rock 'n' Roll
Hall of Fame in Cleveland. She received the Twin Award from
the national YWCA and the Presidential White House Award in
1984.
Robert B. Leake M.A. '88, Oct. 15, 1998. of a
stroke. He was a medic in the 4077th M.A.S.H. unit in the
Korean War and then taught in middle-school science in Grand
Junction, Colo. He was also a pastor for Seventh-Day
Adventist Churches in Oregon, Idaho and California.
