Harry Carson '80 began Lewis & Clark Law School's night program this fall. He will continue his day job as an investigator for the Metropolitan Public Defender in Portland.

Jon McNerney '80 is an international vice president for NewsEdge Corp., which relocated to Switzerland. Jon and his family now live in Geneva, Switzerland.

Jeffrey Philpott '80 is an associate professor of communications at Seattle University.

Justin Ting '80 and Brigitte Dortmund '86 were married in December 1998. In July, Brigitte had a one-person art show at the Mark Woolley Gallery in Portland. They live in Portland.

Michael Allen '81 is a professor of communication at the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. He lives in Shorewood, Wis.

Jose Barquin '81 and his wife, Lana, are parents of Tristan Martino, born Dec. 23, 1998. In February, Jose was promoted to acting director of development and communications for the Western Hemisphere Region of the International Planned Parenthood Federation. In April, he accepted an offer from The Children's Defense Fund as its major gifts manager. Jose lives in Florham Park, N.J.

Margaret Garza '81 has been promoted to executive director of the Washington County Fair Complex.

Craig Gibson '81 and Sarah Clarke Gibson '82 are parents of Margaret Elizabeth, born March 16, 1998, and Daniel, 3. Craig is a professional musician and educator in the Portland area. He teaches middle-school band and is a brass instructor at both Pacific University and Reed College. He also is founder of Columbia Brass and is principal trumpet in the Portland Opera orchestra. Craig also performs regularly in the Oregon Symphony and other ensembles throughout the Northwest. With Margaret's arrival, Sarah retired as a partner in an international trade company. They live in Portland.

Greg Gordon '81 is the director of human resources at The Westin South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, Calif. He lives in Irvine, Calif.

Carolyn Raber '81 and her husband, Weijian Ni, are parents of Anli, born Feb. 4, 1998, and Taili, 4. Carolyn completed her master's degree in international affairs at California State University at Sacramento and teaches history at a Sacramento middle school.

Lee Weinstein '81 was keynote speaker at the Central Oregon Business Trade Show at the Deschutes County Expo Center. Lee is the director of U.S. corporate communications for Nike. He lives in Portland.

Ahmed Al Badi '82 and Vandevco, a newly formed corporation owned by Balbadi Enterprises, recently announced plans for a $60-million residential and commercial project on the site of an old brewery in Vancouver, Wash. The Park Center proposal includes 160 apartments, 72 condominiums and 170,000 square feet of office and commercial space on two downtown blocks once occupied by the Lucky Lager complex. Balbadi Enterprises is a business, construction and development company headed by Ahmed Al Badi.

Wayland Bruns '82 founded CompanionLink Software Inc. in 1987 as a software programming consultancy. The Brookings software company links desktop computer data to hand-held devices such as the PalmPilot.

Ginia Dorfman Caristia '82 began working at The American International School of Florence (Italy) in September 1998. She teaches English as a foreign language and middle-school social studies. Ginia and her husband are in the process of adopting two siblings from India. They live in Greti, Italy.

Doug Greene '82 was recently named the chief information officer for the Peace Corps. Doug was the Peace Corps' chief of field assistance and served as the country director in Vanuatu in the South Pacific from 1996 to 1997. Doug lives in Ken-sington, Maryland.

Dan Jones '82 was recently inducted into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' Hall of Fame. He lives in Beaverton.

Susanne Brown Kahler '82, her husband, Jim, and their children Alana, 2, and Kevin, 5, recently moved from Hawaii to Round Hill, Va. Susanne currently teaches preschool at Barbers Point Naval Air Station.

Timothy C. Lim '82 is a professor of international relations and comparative politics at California State University at Los Angeles. Timothy was recently appointed associate director of the Center for Korean-American and Korean Studies. He has also published a number of scholarly articles and book reviews in three different journals and has edited a reader/textbook on global issues. He lives in Los Angeles.

Masae Kanda Matsuo '82 and Takuya Matsuo were married Oct. 8, 1988. Masae is an accounting clerk at Vital Information Inc. They live in Yokohama, Japan.

Anne Newkirk Niven '82 is chief executive officer of Blessed Bee Inc. She and her husband, Alan, incorporated their family business in July 1998. The company, which posted over $250,000 in sales in 1998, includes a printing firm, an office supply store and three magazines. They are parents of three sons: Arthur, 10, Aidan, 8, and Andrew, 4. They live in Point Arena, Calif.

Steve Baroch '83 is taking 1999 off after working for the past 10 years as director of marketing for one of the largest photo and video chains in the U.S. He plans to complete a degree in German at the University of Oldenburg in Germany. He will also travel throughout Europe, North Africa and Asia. Steve's wife, Ana, will meet him in Europe to climb Mount Blanc. Then, they travel to Nepal to trek to Annapurna. Steve will spend the rest of the year doing volunteer work in Calcutta and Southeast Asia.

Sue Hatanaka Burger '83 was promoted to executive director of interactive marketing account services at America Online in October 1998. Sue works in AOL's San Francisco offices. She lives in Berkeley, Calif., with her husband, Mark, and daughters Sarah, 7, and Katie, 2.

Wendy Weidkamp Hawthorne '83 and her husband, Robert, are parents of Hannah Katherine, born Sept. 7, 1998. They live in Portland.

Jonathan Long '83 is a captain in the U.S. Army Acquisition Corps. In recognition of his accomplishments in the last two years, he was recently awarded the Humanitarian Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal. In 1997, Jonathan moved from Germany to Panama, where he supported contracting missions throughout Central and South America and the Caribbean. He was sent to Honduras in November 1998, immediately following Hurricane Mitch, to play a support role in the largest and most complex joint chiefs of staff humanitarian/civilian assistance mission ever undertaken. Jonathan and his wife, Gina, recently moved from Panama to Corona, Calif.

Christopher Nied '83 is president of Pacific American Lumber Inc., Hawaii's largest distributor of hardwood flooring, lumber, plywood and architectural millwork. Chris has two children, Mackenzie and Ashley. His wife, Suzette, runs her own interior design firm. In his free time, Chris is actively involved in youth and high school soccer. He also runs marathons and paddles long-distance canoe races. They live in Kaneohe, Hawaii.

Dennis Treacy '83 was recently promoted to director of the Department of Environmental Quality for Virginia. He lives in Hanover, Va.

Stuart Wells '83 recently moved to his hometown of San Diego after 15 years in Washington, D.C. Stuart is the director of the city's lobbying arm, the Intergovernmental Relations Department. He and his wife, Debbie, are parents of Caroline, 4, and Abby, 11 months.

Gail Kim Wopschall '83 and her husband, Vaughn, are parents of Liana Zoe, born Nov. 21, 1998. She joins older sister Kyra. They live in El Segundo, Calif.

Lorraine Whitney Young '83 celebrated the 10th anniversary of her business, Golden Rule Bears. She lives in Sumner, Wash., with her husband, Tom.

Brenda Jamsgard '84 is an artist and had a recent showing of fused glass sculpture at North Bend's Frog Blossom Gallery. She lives in Aloha.

Laura Bischof Langton '84 received her Ph.D. in biology and biomedical sciences from Washington University in St. Louis last year. She is now employed as a forensic scientist doing DNA analysis for the Illinois State Police. She lives in St. Louis with her husband and stepson.

Julie Harris Lundquist '84 gave birth to twin girls, Annika Jill and Kirsten Jo, Dec. 30, 1998. They join brothers Perry Russel, 14 months, and Hans Andrew, 3. They live in Westfield, Ind.

Penny Norton Malloy '84 has retired from Sony and is now a stay-at-home mom and volunteer. Penny is the president-elect of the Junior League of San Jose, Calif., and recently gave birth to her second daughter.

Cindy Scharf '84 flew to the Balkans in May to work in Kosovar refugee camps as a volunteer with the International Medical Corps. She was responsible for reporting to the organization's Web site and newsletters on what was actually happening in the area.

Rebecca Brown '84 and Philip Thompson were married Feb. 14. Rebecca is the country affairs officer for Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama in the Office of Western Hemispheric Affairs of the United States Information Agency. Rebecca and Philip are stationed in Washington, D.C.

Sara Worsham '85 and David Harmon were married in 1996 and are parents of Corinne Louise, born Feb. 24, 1998. Sara worked for the Bureau of Land Management in Salem. Now, she enjoys staying home with Corinne. They live in Seattle.

Gretchen Wilbur Shinoda '85 and her husband, Tomohito '82, are the parents of Erika, born June 12, 1998. They live in Niigata, Japan.

Carol Austin '86 works for the U.S. Postal Service in Portland doing alternative dispute resolution.

David Avery '86 and his wife, Brenda, are parents of twin girls, Aspen and Sierra, born Aug. 5, 1997, and a son, Blake, 6. Both David and Brenda are employed by the Anchorage School District. David teaches eighth-grade, and Brenda is a counselor. They live in Anchorage, Alaska.

Karen Dunn '86 and Daniel Bernard M.A. '97 were married in 1995. They live in Portland.

Daena Goldsmith '86 is an associate professor of speech communication at the University of Illinois.

Dana Haynes '86 has taken a reporting job with the Salem Statesman Journal, leaving his position as managing editor of the Lake Oswego Review and the West Linn Tidings.

David LaFrance '86 has been named director of finance for the Denver Water Department. He will oversee the utility's $200-million budget. He formerly worked as an economist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and CH2M Hill. David joined the Denver Water Department in 1993 as manager of rate administration.

He Rui-yong '86 is an English professor and an adviser to the Office of International Exchanges at Guangxi Normal University in Guilin, Guangxi, China.

Matt Brownfield '87 and Kristin Anderson Brownfield '87 recently moved back to Portland after finishing graduate degrees at San Francisco State University. Kristin received an M.B.A., and Matt received his master's degree in organizational industrial psychology. Both are employed by Intel. They are parents of twin boys, Otto and Hunter, 14.

Doug Riggs '87 has been hired as a vice president by Pac/West Communications of Lake Oswego. Doug is an expert in crisis management, strategic planning and federal governmental relations, and has spent the past 11 years in Washington, D.C., as a congressional aide.

David Thompson '87 and Lori Farrell '88 are parents of Quinland Rose, born Oct. 16, 1998. They live in Tualatin.

Erin Hedenberg Thompson '87 won a gold medal in women's masters soccer at the Nike World Masters Games in Portland in 1998. For the past 10 years, Erin has played for The Thistles, a Division I Open women's masters team in Portland. Erin also coaches the Hood River Valley High School girls' freshman team and previously coached the Hood River Dynamos U-17 girls' team for two summers. She is a nationally certified D-level soccer coach.

Garth Virgin '87 has been living in Munich, Germany, since graduation. He studied medicine and is now working for a biotechnological pharmaceutical company, Ares-Serono, as assistant to the medical director.

Shedell Bethel '88 and Shawn Smith were married in July 1997. Shedell works as a mutual fund accountant. They live in Nassau, Bahamas.

Teresa Locke '88 and Tim Carlson were married Feb. 28 in Negril, Jamaica. Teresa is a pediatric oncology nurse at Doernbecher Children's Hospital, and Tim is the director of legal affairs and attorney for In Focus Systems in Wilsonville. They reside in Portland.

Elizabeth Ardinger Olsen '88, M.A.T. '92 and her husband, Larry, are parents of Sawyer Owen, born April 20. Elizabeth and Larry are both teachers in Kodiak, Alaska.

Brad Wilkin '88 and his wife, Debra, are parents of Fletcher Edward Samuel, born May 23. Fletcher joins Connor, 6, and Lauren, 2.

Alicia Ory DeNicola '89 left for a four-month trip in June to Udaipur, Rajasthan, for advanced language training in Hindi in support of fieldwork requirements for a Ph.D. in anthropology from Syracuse University.

Stephanie Reynolds '89 and her husband, Matt Johnson '90, recently bought their first house in Portland. Since 1991, Stephanie has been teaching women's self-defense through the Portland Police Bureau's WomenStrength program. In 1997, she became director of the program. Matt and Jeff Nelson '92 have started a graphic design firm called Orange Arts, located in downtown Portland.

Robin Rosa '89 and Michael Swartz were married Feb. 14. Robin is the director of human resources for Elmer's Restaurants. Michael is the director of operations for Macheezmo Mouse restaurants. They live in Beaverton.
