Stephanie Blakely M.A. '78 was hired as the
principal of Chenowith Elementary School in The Dalles.
Previously, she worked for the Hood River School District as
head of the five-county Secondary School-to-Work Youth
Transition Program. n
William Allured M.Ed. '79 received his Ph.D. in
clinical psychology from Adelphi University in New York in
1993 and is currently in the postdoctoral program in
psychoanalysis and psychotherapy at New York University. He
has a private practice in Manhattan and Port Washington,
N.Y., and is adjunct faculty at Adelphi University, Yeshiva
University and Pace University. Elizabeth Allured M.A. '89
received her doctorate in clinical psychology from Yeshiva
University in 1996. Currently, she is staff psychologist at
North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center in Roslyn,
N.Y., and has a private practice in Port Washington, N.Y.
William and Elizabeth have two children, Will (17) and
Jonathan (13), who share in family interests that include
skiing, backpacking, sailing and camping.
Al Aldridge M.Ed. '79 and Jeannie Anderson were
married Aug. 21, 1998, at the Forever Yours Wedding Chapel
in Battle Ground, Wash. Al teaches music and coaches
athletics at Prairie High School.
Don Landes-McCullough M.A.T. '79, M.A. '85 is the
new pastor of Eastrose Fellowship Unitarian Universalist
Church in Gresham.
Sue Gimarelli Harris M.A.T. '87 recently completed
her eighth year as principal of St. John Fisher School
(grades K-8) in Southwest Portland and in July became the
new principal of Valley Catholic School (grades 7-12) in
Beaverton. She is continuing in the Lewis & Clark
educational administration program. She lives in Tigard.
Donald W. Spencer M.A. '88 is the director of
family services at The Dougy Center: The National Center for
Grieving Children and Families in Portland. In March he
trained seven staff members and 53 volunteer facilitators
for The Rainbow House in Kobe, Japan, to start peer support
groups. He was the lead writer of Helping Teens Cope with
Death, published in April in a series of guidebooks produced
by The Dougy Center.
Dave Clark M.A. '91 who has directed the Albany
Parks and Recreation Department since 1975, has received the
American Parks and Recreation Society's Distinguished Fellow
Award. The award is the highest citation the society gives
to a member and is based on outstanding service and
leadership. Dave has been an active member of professional,
religious and civic organizations throughout his career. He
has been president of the Oregon Recreation and Park
Association and was chairman of the Northwest Regional
Council for the association. He was also president of the
American Park and Recreation Society he currently serves on
the society's national board.
Rosalie Francine Reader M.A. '91 and Jeffery Lynn
Hammer were married July 25, 1998, at the Albany First
Christian Church. Rosalie works for the Linn County
Department of Health Services. Jeffery works for Oregon
Freeze Dry. They live in Albany.
Ron Podmore M.A. '92 recently completed his one
year principal's internship for Pacific Lutheran University.
Ron is affiliated with the Federal Way School District and
resides in Tacoma, Wash.
Leann Bleakney M.P.A.'93 is the executive director
of Water for Life, a nonprofit group dedicated to
maintaining agricultural water use. Previously she worked on
Columbia River endangered salmon recovery issues as
communications director for the Columbia River Alliance for
Fish, Commerce and Communities.
Laurie Erekson M.P.A. '93 is the new principal of
the Payette Lakes Middle School in the McCall-Donnelly
School District in Idaho. Previously she was principal at
the Waldo Middle School in Salem.
Juanita Neal M.A.T. '93 moved to Mission, B.C., in
August 1997 to become vice president for education of the
Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada (B.C. Conference).
Her responsibilities involve the supervision of 24
independent schools located throughout the province, 108
teachers and 1,500 students.
Laura H. Scully M.A.T. '93 and her husband,
Brendan, are parents of Madison Elizabeth, born March 12,
and Kelsey (3). Laura is taking a leave of absence from
Centennial Middle School, where she has been a seventh-grade
science teacher for six years, and plans to return in the
fall. They live in Gresham.
Tara Garwin vanDernoot M.A.T. '94 and her husband,
Craig, are parents of Garvin, born Aug. 7, 1998. They live
in Edwards, Colo.
Tomi Franklin M.A.T. '96 and Curtis Kluver were
married Aug. 1, 1998, at First United Methodist Church. Tomi
is a teacher and Curtis is a sales representative. They live
in Tigard.
Patrick McCreery M.A.T. '96 and Tara Douherty were
married Nov. 21, 1998. They live in Portland.
Jon Isensee M.A.T. '97 and Libby Baines were
married June 28, 1998, at Central Lutheran Church in
Portland. Jon is a biology teacher at Nestucca High School
in Cloverdale. Libby is a marketing representative at Key
Title Company in Tillamook. They live in Pacific City.
Michelle Pigeon M.A.T. '97 and Andrew Swanson were
married Aug. 8, 1998, at McMenamins Edgefield in Troutdale.
Michelle is a teacher, and Andrew is a surface water
technician.
Jennifer Jean Ritenburgh M.A. '97 and Anthony Paul
Armstrong were married August 3, 1997, at the Queen Anne
Victorian Mansion in Portland. They live in Vancouver,
Wash.
Richard Carson M.P.A. '98 was hired by Clark
County (Wash.) as community development director, a position
with authority over planning, building, code enforcement and
other government functions. Richard has worked for the state
of Oregon, the Metropolitan Service District, Lane County
and private planning firms.
Stacey L. Eisenkraft M.A.T. '98 is teaching
eighth-grade English in New York City's Chinatown, where 85
percent of the students at Dr. Sun Yat Sen Intermediate
School are recent Chinese immigrants. She is taking
additional education classes to earn New York teaching
certification and expects to be certified in both French and
English.
Michelle Murray M.A. '98 and Marty Butler were
married Aug. 9, 1998 at the First Unitarian Church in
Portland. Michelle and Marty live in Hillsboro.
Barbara Stonewall M.Ed. '98 and Deborah Stonewall
recently bought a house in Vancouver, Wash.

Clifford O. Dougherty '30, March 12, at age 92.
Clifford taught high school, coached football and was a
teacher and principal in Newport and Nestucca from 1930 to
1943. He served as postmaster in Cloverdale from 1943 until
he retired in 1973.
Orvo A. Nikula '38, May 29, of natural causes.
George L. Moore '42, March 20, at age 77. During
World War II, George served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in
the South Pacific. He worked for Northwest Natural Gas for
41 years, retiring as supervisor of the meter shop in
1983.
Carl William Rodabaugh '43, May 7, at age 79. Carl
served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He
worked at Pacific Northwest Bell for 33 years until retiring
in 1978.
John S. Kindy '48, Dec. 11, 1998.
Mark William Calder, Jr. '49, May 9, at age 74.
During World War II, Mark served in the U.S. Army Air Force
in the Pacific. He was an auto salesman for Lake Chevrolet
and Sunset Volkswagen and a legal advisor for several credit
companies from 1976 until his retirement in 1989.
Lawrence "Mel" Woodall '49, M.A. '50, Oct. 1,
1998, at age 74. Lawrence served in the U.S. Army Air Force
during World War II. He taught high school in Baker, Yamhill
and Joseph for three years, then worked for the U.S. Fish
& Wildlife Department as a biologist, retiring in
1982.
Verle Edward Duckering M.A. '50, Jan. 20, of
leukemia at age 72. Verle served in the U.S. Navy during
World War II. He worked for Portland Public Schools for 30
years and spent 25 of those years as a teacher at Madison
High School. He was also an assistant professor of education
at Portland State University for 10 years. He was an avid
mountain climber and tennis player.
Elvin Jackson '50, Aug. 26, 1998 at age 70. Elvin
was a partner with his father as a wholesale distributor for
Standard Oil. He farmed for many years and later sold real
estate until his retirement in 1990. Since then he worked in
Rutherford with his son for Hills Vineyards.
Ellis F. Stout '50, Dec. 17, 1998, of
complications from a stroke at age 78. Ellis was in the Army
Air Corps from 1942 to 1945 and was stationed in England. He
was employed by the Washington State Department of
Corrections in adult parole and probation, supervision, and
finally as the chief executive director until he retired in
1978. He enjoyed golf, horseback riding, dancing,
backpacking, fishing and bicycling.
John Alfred Torgerson '50, Nov. 8, 1998, at age
72. John served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He
taught school in Portland for 13 years before becoming a
vocational rehabilitation counselor for the state of Oregon.
He retired in 1993.
Jim Crowthers '51, Oct. 10, 1998, at age 77. Jim
taught elementary school at West Tualatin View, Barnes
Elementary School in Beaverton and Vernonia Grade School. He
retired in the mid-1970s from Joseph Gale Elementary School
in Forest Grove. Following his retirement, he drove a taxi
and taught at Banks Christian Academy High School. Jim
served several metropolitan area churches as an interim
pastor, most recently the Tigard Family Baptist Church,
where he was a one of the original founders.
Mary Belle GrosJacques '51, Aug. 5, 1998, of acute
leukemia at age 69. Mary was a coordinator and leader for
parent study groups, a member of the Farm Home board, a
worker with Habitat for Humanity, and was a Stephen
Minister. She was an active member of the Episcopal Church
of the Good Samaritan in Corvallis, where she was a
Eucharistic minister, and recently was involved with the
Spanish Language Church.
Edwin E. Roberts '51, Dec. 10, 1998, at age 76.
Edwin served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during
World War II. He was a retired office equipment
salesman.
Floyd W. "Wally" Jorgensen '52, Oct. 11, 1998, at
age 73. Wally served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a crew
chief and mechanic on C-54 airplanes. He worked as an
industrial service manager for Goodwill Industries for
several years. He owned and operated Wally's Video Store in
Sutherlin for more than 10 years. He and his wife, Bonnie,
organized the Douglas County Timber Days Parade for seven
years. Wally was certified to teach painting and was well
known for his oil paintings.
Donald Hines '53, Dec. 15, 1998, of cancer at age
67. Donald served in Army intelligence in Japan and then
taught school in Oregon and Washington. He earned a master's
degree at Reed College in 1960. Donald preserved Indian lore
and history through his dozen books about inland Northwest
tribal cultures before white settlement. Titles include The
Forgotten Tribes: Oral Tales of the Teninos and Adjacent
Mid-Columbia River Indian Nations (1991) and Ghost Voices:
Yakima Indian Myths, Legends, Humor, and Hunting (1992). He
founded Great Eagle Publishing of Issaquah to publish and
make accessible his work.
Robert L. Bridges '54, March 17, of prostate
cancer at age 67. Robert served in the U.S. Air Force. He
worked in the printing business from the age of 10, was a
salesman for Dickinson's for a few years and had been an
independent print broker for the past five years.
Irving Wolcott Jones '54, March 19, at age 67.
Irving was a fisheries biologist for the Oregon Department
of Fish and Wildlife for 30 years, retiring in 1987. He was
a member of the Mount Hood Ski Patrol for 25 years and was a
founding member of the Riverswest Small Craft Center.
Richard Sterling Peterson '56, Feb. 27, of cancer
at age 65. Richard served in various posts during his more
than 27-year career in state government, including director
of social services and superintendent of MacLaren School for
Boys in Woodburn. He also worked for the Oregon Department
of Corrections as assistant superintendent of both program
and general services and as superintendent for the Oregon
State Correctional Institution in Salem. He was promoted to
the central office as assistant director for institutions
and interim director of corrections before retiring in
1989.
Ruth E. Breckenridge Hughes '58, April 2, at age
95. She moved to Portland in 1953 and helped organize
Eastminster Presbyterian Church. She taught in the Parkrose
School District until moving to California in 1962. She
later moved back to Oregon and taught in Merrill and
Chiloquin.
Donald D. Aasen '59, March 14, at age 66. Donald
served in the U.S. Navy in the Korean War. He was a salesman
for Smith's Home Furnishings for 10 years until it closed in
1995.
Richard William Hehn '60, Nov. 5, 1998, at age 61.
Richard served in the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from
Oregon Health Sciences University and practiced
ophthalmology and radiology in Portland and Couer d'Alene,
Idaho.
Gerold "Jake" Van Der Vlugt '60, Jan. 10, of Lou
Gehrig's disease at age 59. Jake received a medical degree
in 1963 and, after an internship at Los Angeles County
General Hospital, joined the Public Health Service. He
retired from the Agency for International Development as
coordinator of programs for health and child survival in the
private and voluntary cooperation office in 1989. In
retirement, he pursued a second career remodeling old houses
in the Georgetown section of Washington D.C.
William Luther Landen '62, Feb. 12, of a heart
attack at age 59. William served in the National Guard
during the late 1950s. He was a certified public accountant.
Most recently he was self-employed, but he worked for Arthur
Anderson LLP for many years.
Don A. Munson '62, Jan. 8, of a brain tumor at age
60. Don was a certified public accountant and joined Boise
Cascade in 1969 as an auditor. He later became controller of
the packing division in Boise, Idaho. In 1983, he became
controller of Boise Cascade's office product division based
in Itasca, Ill. In 1991, he became chief financial officer
for Basienet, a buying cooperative for independent office
product dealers in Boston. In 1992, Basienet moved to
Buffalo, N.Y.; and Don became president, successfully
merging Basienet and two other buying cooperatives. In 1994,
he moved the merged company, TriMega Inc., to Des Plaines,
Ill.
Fay Thornton Myers '69, May 15, of cancer.
Services were held at Castle Point, Kailua Beach, Hawaii, on
May 31.
Don J. Dennis '70, Feb. 27, of lung cancer at age
69. Don served in the U.S. Navy for 21 years, including
during the Vietnam War, until retiring as a lieutenant
commander in 1967. He was a biology teacher for St. Mary's
Academy in Portland and later for a year at La Center High
School in Washington, where he had lived since 1969.
Thomas Michael Simdars '72, M.A.T. '75, May 8, in
an auto accident at age 54. He served in the U.S. Army from
1968 to 1971 and until 1992 in the Army Reserves. He was a
teacher at Lynch Wood Elementary School in Gresham and had
begun his career at Lynch Park Elementary School in Gresham
in 1972.
Richard French M.P.A. '82, July 21, 1998, of a
heart attack at age 59. Richard was a leading activist in
programs for Native Americans, veterans and the elderly. He
was a founding member and current president of the
Portland/Vancouver Chapter of the Northwest Indian Veterans
Association. He was a forester for the Bureau of Indian
Affairs for 35 years and retired in 1994. He was also a
member of the Northwest Indian Veterans Association and its
parent group, the Veterans Affairs Committee of the
Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians.
Joan Winslow Lawrence M.A. '82, Dec. 14, 1998.
Joan was a facilitator at the University of Oregon Substance
Abuse Center. She was an accomplished rider, bird shot and
tennis player.
