Debate team shines at competition

by Matthias Fripp

Lewis & Clark's speech and debate team was awarded third place and team president Mary Lynn Veden received the second place award for individuals in this year's Northwestern Regional Division I sweepstakes, despite competition from much larger teams.

The sweepstakes awards were given at the year's final Northwestern Regional tournament at Whitman College last weekend. They are based on the total number of points earned by the team and by its individual members in final and break rounds of regional tournaments throughout the year.

Veden competes only in individual events, a category which includes such activities as interpretation, platform speaking and impromptu speaking. She took first place overall in individual events, and finished second overall to Joe Foy of Carroll College, who competes in both individual events and debate, giving him access to more events in which to earn points.

Veden's performance is typical of the LC team, which has consistently scored well despite its limited presence at forensics tournaments. "I'm very proud of the work we did, because we had a very small team and we had a lot of success," says Veden. "We had a lot of people who performed exceptionally well, and the schools we lost to had teams twice as large as ours. We're a small team, but we're scrappy and we fight hard."

LC was beaten for team honors for the year by Pacific Lutheran University and Carroll College.

Members of the LC forensics team also placed highly in the tournament at Whitman. Junior Terry James took second place in senior programmed oral interpretation and fourth place in poetry interpretation and received honorable mention in the annual sweepstakes. He and Veden won third place in dramatic duo interpretation. Freshman Aimee Sands won second place in junior prose interpretation. Veden, a senior, won first place in programmed oral interpretation and third place in poetry interpretation.

Based on strong performance this year so far, two debaters—Jared Ellis (a senior) and Nicholas Hesterburg (a sophomore)—will go to CEDA debate nationals at the University of Rochester in New York over spring break. Veden and James have also qualified for the National Individual Events Tournament at the Northern Arizona University on April 3Ð6. The LC team hopes to qualify members for more national events at the national qualifying tournament at Linfield College this weekend.
