| Seattle University swims past the Pioneersby Merry WarnerThe Lewis & Clark women's swim team swam neck and neck with Seattle University on Nov. 15. The last relay determined LC's loss to SU 117-85. The short-handed men's team also suffered a loss, only scoring 46 points to SU's 114. In women's competition, LC's team was evenly matched in depth to SU's team. The Pioneer women started things off right with a first place finish in the 200 m. medley relay (Schmitt, MacCollum, Dembrow, Borgen). Freshman Tatyana Dembrow had a strong second place finish in the 1500 m. freestyle (20:48.45), while teammate Lyndsay Wilson-Williams placed fourth in 23:43.51. Tonia Givan finished 2nd in the 200 m. freestyle in 2:27.47 followed by Nina Dunphy in 2:31.13. Next, the Pioneers took a third, fourth, and fifth place in the 50 m. freestyle with Jennifer MacCollum (30.87), Attilee Hasz (33.64), and Marcela Duarte (40.24). Ashley Schmitt with a time of 5:33.63 and Carolyn Wulf with a time of 6:23.59 finished hard for a second and fourth place finish in the 400 m. individual medley. In the 200 m. butterfly, Givan narrowly took 2nd in 2:47.08, while Merry Warner finished 3rd (3:03.27). Taking 2nd in the 100 m. freestyle, Maren Holmboe had a time of 1:08.20, while teammates Hasz (1:14.19) and Duarte (1:35.67) finished fourth and sixth. Kari Borgen placed third in the 200 m. backstroke (2:48.56) and Warner finished second in the 400 m. freestyle (5:11.87) while Wilson-Williams placed fifth (5:48.56). LC was led by performances by Schmitt with a first place finish in the 200 m. backstroke (2:35.34) and MacCollum also with first place finish in the 200 m. breaststroke (3:03.71). Dunphy also put in a crucial swim with a second place finish in the 200 m. breaststroke in 3:07.40. The men's team fared well with only three swimmers representing LC. Each swimmer stepped up and took on three individual events a piece. LC grabbed two first place finishes by freshman Kevin Anderson in the 400 m. freestyle (5:00.27), and by Andy Holder in the 200 m. breaststroke (2:46.85). Brian Arvidson swam the 1500 m. freestyle in 20:13.76, the 50 m. freestyle (29.23), and the 200 m. butterfly (2:51.22) placing second in every event. Anderson placed second in the 200 m. freestyle (2:13.53) and the 100 m. freestyle (1:01.72). Teammate Holder finished second in both the 200 m. backstroke (2:39.79) and 400 m. I.M. (5:26.88). The women's swim team is already looking toward nationals in March. They have qualified in the 200 yd. medley relay, the 200 yd. freestyle relay, and the 400 yd. freestyle relay. So far, top swimmer Ashley Schmitt has guaranteed her spot at nationals in the 100 yd. backstroke and is expected to add more events as the season continues. This weekend the LC swim team is off to the Husky Invitational and will return to NCIC competition on Jan. 10th when they will take on Whitworth College.
