Kings of Leon stray from good old rock and roll
As much as we indie types crave novelty, innovation and a certain oddness in our music, sometimes it’s nice to listen to a good old rock album. The Kings of Leon have been one of a few go-to bands for this kind of back-to-basics rock and roll. Their last album, 2005’s Aha Shake Heartbreak was fuzzy, raunchy and gritty, with a southern twist like the cooler side of Lynard Skynard. On their most recent release, Because of the Times, however, the band ventures out into stranger territory. Sometimes the album sounds rawer than usual, other times more produced.

Well-known Latin literature scholar (that’s veni, vidi, vici, not Central American, Latin), author, former Bryn Mawr Classical Studies professor, and former president of the American Philological Association—not to mention one of Visiting Assistant Professor of History Gordon Kelly’s old professors—Julia Haig Gaisser came to campus last Wednesday to discuss the means and motivations for the transmission of classical texts throughout the ages.

Twenty-three reasons not to see “The Number 23”
The new movie “The Number 23,” starring Jim Carrey, came out last weekend. This suspenseful thriller is more of an attempt for Carrey to stretch from his usual comedic roles to something different. Unfortunately, that attempt was half-assed and failed miserably.

Big rappers add to the big problems with lyrics, claims
Lil’ Wayne claims that he is the best rapper alive. Currently, his sharp southern twang can be heard twisting vowels on constant rotation on Portland’s Jamming 95.5. He holds the number two position rapping over a love song with Lloyd titled, “You,” as well as the number one slot with Fat Joe titled, “Make it Rain,” a song about throwing money on strippers.
