Part of German East Africa (with Burundi and Rwanda)
Conquest involved bloody suppression of "Maji Maji Rebellion" (1905-1906)
[map of German Campaigns] [Description of the rebellion and a bibliography about it]
"The
ruthless and violent repression of the rebellion changed the historical landscape
of southern Tanzania out of recognition. Today, the area devastated during the
Maji Maji rebellion constitutes one of the largest wildlife reserves in Africa." quoted from site listed above |
Part of WWI was fought in Tanganyika -- the East African campaign against Germany
Became British Mandate under the League of Nations after German defeat in WWI, and later became Trust Territory under the United Nations. The arrangement imposed some restrictions on UK to run the territory more for benefit of "natives" than was true for Kenya

Much less white settlement in Tanganyika or in Zanzibar than had been the case in Kenya (in large part because it was discouraged by the British Government), although there were some European centers in Lushoto (in the Usumbara Mountains where the Germans had their winter capital for a time), Arusha, and Iringa
