OVERVIEW: While Calculus I is concerned with local changes in a function, Calculus II focuses on accumulated changes. Models solved by accumulation functions lead to the definition of the integral and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. TEXTBOOK: Calculus (debut edition) by Brian E. Blank and Steven J. Krantz NOTE: Before attempting any homework assignment, you are expected to have read the associated section of the textbook. HOMEWORK: Homework is assigned daily and posted on the homework page. Homework must be turned in by 5:00 pm on the day it is due. You may turn in homework directly to me at the beginning of class on the day it is due OR place it in the Homework Folder posted outside my office door (BoDine 304) by 5 pm on the day it is due. Citing from the College Catalog, “Students should expect to spend an average of two hours outside of class preparing for each hour in class.” Therefore, you should allow yourself at least 6-7 hours of weekly study time for this course, more if necessary. Study time includes reading the appropriate sections of the textbook, doing the homework exercises, attempting extra problems if necessary, and writing up your solutions. I encourage you to cooperate with your classmates on solving homework problems, BUT each student must independently write up his/her own solutions. Please review The Lewis & Clark College Catalog (pp. 18-19) and Student Handbook for policies regarding Academic Integrity, as you will be held to them. MATH SKILLS CENTER: The Math Skills Center is an VERY useful resource for homework help, especially regarding precalculus skills and concepts (e.g., most of Chapter 1). If you are having trouble with precalculus concepts or need to "brush up," you should plan to spend some time reviewing on your own and/or seek help from tutors in the Math Skills Center when needed. EXAMS: There will be 3 midterm examinations. See the course schedule below. Any changes to these dates will be announced in class and posted on the course webpage. The cumulative final exam will take place Thursday, May 8, 8:30-11:30 am. Observe these dates before making travel plans. POLICY ON MAKE-UP EXAMS AND LATE ASSIGNMENTS: If you have a legitimate reason for missing an exam (e.g., a documented medical emergency), you must notify me ASAP to make special arrangements. Late homework assignments will be penalized by 10% for every 24 hour period (or increment thereof) between the deadline and the time it is received. TECHNOLOGY: You will need a calculator for this course. You are welcome and encouraged to use technology, such as graphing calculators and computers, for homework assignments. You will be told in advance when the use of technology is prohibited on an assignment or exam. GRADING: Your final grade in the course will be a weighted average of the following components: Homework (25%), 3 Midterm Exams (50%), Final Exam (25%). All grading, including final letter grades, will reflect the following general criteria (taken from the College Catalog):
A final percentage above 90% guarantees a letter grade of A-, above 87% guarantees B+, above 84% guarantees B, above 80% guarantees B-, and so on in the same way for other grades. STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
