Long before we decided to remodel the house, we thought about fixing up the back yard. In fact, we did have a fence built and some of the wild blackberry bushes taken out. Unforturnately, we also had to have a very large ash tree removed because of diesese. The picture on the left is how it looked when this was complete - it was a definate improvement over the previous "woods" that existed out back. At his point we asked the the contractor who did the fence job to give us a bid for back yard landscaping. The bid came in pretty high and we were beginning to seriously consider construction on the house so we decided again doing any work on the yard until the remodel was done. |
| Fast foward a year and a half. The house is just about complete, many events have occured in our lives and we're finally thinking things are getting back to "normal." Our attention again focused on the back yard. There were two parts to our thinking: landscape and a pottery shed. Vicki wanted to get back to throwing pottery -- a hobby she enjoys very much. So we decided to give our landscape and shed project to our wedding coordinator (currently going to landscape design school), Jennifer. She had done such a great job with the wedding that we knew she had what it takes to get this project done. Jen jumped into the project with both feet and we were off and running. The shed side of the project was taken on by Bill McGown our contractor for the remodel, in coordination with Jen. |

Jen's design breaks the yard into several different areas. There seemed to be plenty of space to work with to create the areas. We had some general ideas about what we wanted in the yard but not any really much in the way of specifics. The major features of Jen's design are: the shed, raised veggie beds, an herb garden, a shade garden, grass, and a water feature. Part of the design involves creating tiers that will mitigate the sloping lot. The tiers are created with stone walls. In the interest of cost, we decided to build the walls ourselves. So 4 tons of rock were dumped in the front yard and then moved to the back for the walls. Above you see the beginning of the first wall (upper corner of the lot) and to the left is the finished product. Not too bad for a first try -- Jen is a great supervisor! |
| Jen is very dedicated and goes to all lengths to do what's necessary to create a beautiful environment. Here she is working on creating one of the prettiest areas of the design -- the shade garden. When Jen first surveyed the back yard she discovered an old fallen tree trunk. This has turned out to be one place where she can really do some fun stuff with differnt plants and bulbs. Here she is planting tulips and daffodils in the log area. This will not be the best picture of Jen that you see -- I promise. |

Here is an updated view of the fallen tree (aka the log) after Jen did more work on the area. While there as some flowers that have been planted, there were many natural plants that make this a really great area. Some of these are ferns, trillium, and lots of heuchera. |
