The second story is about to become reality. Unfortunately as the roof is about to be removed, the rain has started. Why we are putting on the second floor while it's raining -- well that's another story that's on the home page. But it's fall in Oregon so we know the rain is the norm -- we even had a dryer fall than usual so we are somewhat ahead of the wetness. The first pictures of real second story work, taken November 25, have arrived thanks to Dewey Kelly. Here you see Bill McGown working to remove trusses from the clearstory/stairs area of the new plan. Fortunately, the rains have subsided for a while so Bill and crew are not working in the rain. |
| This shows the progress in removing the roof from the second story area in the back part of the house. This was taken from what will be the area of the master bath. The windows on the left side of the picture are in the master bedroom -- they will be removed since much of that area of wall will be shared with the pantry. | ![]() |

At least the fireplace is still standing! This area of the kitchen/great room will be vaulted. Perhaps not as vaulted as you see here but nonetheless, vaulted some. The main beam you see on the right is the edge of the second story line on the east side. The holes in the flooring were cut to pour the additional footings needed to help support the second story. This may not be Bill's favorite picture of the house. :-) |
| We're moving right along -- progress at last! This picture (taken December 9) shows the only roofing left is on part of the garage. The framing crew is starting soon and the rain has stopped for a while. It's very baren in there, but then again, we did want an "open look" to the place. The second story will cover the area from the corner on the left to where the outside wall intersects the one remaining studded wall (center). New beams will be placed from the rear wall to a support post that will be installed on the footing that is inside the hole in the floor behind Bill (crouching). And from the support post to where the studded wall is. | ![]() |

It's December 11 and the rains are back. The crew has all the foundation beams in place and some of the decking installed (center). They are leaving most of the other decking out for now to allow access by other trades and inspectors. They expect an inspection on the understructure today and will then start framing the outside walls. Interesting note, the large open space in the back wall is approximately where the french doors in the master bedroom will be. The blue tarp to the left is the hot tub (right outside the master bath). |
