The away room is the place you go to get away from the rest of the family or activities that are going on elsewhere in the house. It is, in our case, our office and work area. The "away room" concept comes from Sarah Susanka the author of The Not So Big House. Since I've mentioned it, The Not So Big House is a great book, you can get at most book stores or through Amazon.com. If you are building or remodeling a house you must read this book -- it is full of excellent advice and pertainent information. What you see on the left is the wall of what was a bedroom and the hall. The bedroom will become the away room and the hall will be shorter. |
This picture was taken October 21. The away room can now be more easily pictured. The wall we are facing will have french doors that open into the room. The room is 12 feet deep. Oringinally it was 10 feet but looking at it we deicided we needed additional room for projects and work area. In the long run, this caused the back of the house to be extended an extra 2 feet beyond planned. More on that in the master bedroom/bath page. |

This view is taken from the kitchen area. The area on the near side of the away room is where the stairs to the second floor will be located. They will be partially visible from the kitchen and great room. |
| Now February 26 and I really haven't said a lot about the away room yet. Here you see the window for the away room waiting to be installed and the wall is made out of sheathing instead of dry wall since it is a shear wall required by code for earthquake stability. I expect that the installation of the pocket french doors should begin soon. We picked out carpeting for the room - a very nice forest green. It's going to be a great place to work. | ![]() |

Finally we can update the away room too. This picture is looking through the french door toward the front door. You can see the framing for the pocket french doors. Also in view is insulation which was installed under the floor (see the opening in the floor just outside the doors). This room will also be the hub for the sound system so there are a vast array of wires sticking out of the wall at the moment. |
