Student Advocates for Business and Environmental
Responsibility (SABER): A New Voice on Campus

By Paul Maloney

Student Advocates for Business and Environmental Responsibility (SABER) was officially recognized and funded by the Student Bar Association this spring. The SABER philosophy is that business interests and environmental issues are not necessarily mutually exclusive. With that in mind, SABER’s goal is to foster collaborative efforts between environmentalists, resource owners, and resource managers to find pragmatic solutions to environmental problems and to promote a healthy and sustainable environment and economy. It is this belief that SABER offers to the Northwestern School of Law community to enrich the environmental dialogue on campus.

SABER has hit the ground running this spring, ratifying bylaws and holding elections. The following officers were installed, all first-year students: Elizabeth Howard (President), Seth Sproul (Vice President), Hub Adams (Secretary), Jim Shikany (Treasurer), and Chris Slotee and Kristian Roggendorf (Public Relations Co-Chairs). SABER’s faculty advisor is Dean Huffman.

SABER presented a lunchtime speaker, Oregon State University Professor Dr. John Buckhouse, to the law school campus on April 13. He spoke about his experiences working with ranchers, the federal government, and environmentalists in a restoration project for eastern Oregon’s Bear Creek. Next year, the club will be sponsoring other speakers and on-campus events.

If you are interested in joining SABER, or if you simply want more information about the club, email Elizabeth Howard (ehoward@lclark.edu).
