Working Toward an Environmentally Conscious Campus

by Laurie Baughman

Welcome to the incoming first-year class and welcome back to all second-, third- and fourth-year students. As chair of the Student Bar Association’s Recycling Committee I wanted to share with you some of the projects we worked on and are still working on from last year. One of the brightest achievements was the addition of plants to our library for aesthetic as well as air quality goals. We have also been working with the administration in obtaining new, larger receptacles for recyclable materials which should be in place this fall. There has been discussion of including a composting plan for our campus, which will be included in the school’s five year plan.

A project we hope to realize this year is the Partyware Loan Program. This program would allow student organizations to borrow a set of dishware and all the trimmings for their events as an alternative to buying paper products or renting from Bon Appetit. At the end of last year this project was tabled for the budget committee to work out at the beginning of this school year.

Lastly the reigns for the dryboards were turned over to this committee. As everyone knows, or will soon find out, the dry boards in the student lounge serve as the hub of communications at the law school. Each year we reduce the amount of paper used for posting announcements and notices of events happening on campus on these boards by not papering all available surfaces. On that note I would like to send out a hearty thank you to the dedicated volunteers who helped keep the boards up to date last year: Jess Brown, Holly Pettit, and Kristen Boyd. Anyone with neat handwriting interested in volunteering can contact Laurie Baughman at llb@lclark.edu. Any suggestions for the Recycling Committee can be sent there as well.
