WEEK 3

Teaching S.M.A.R.T. with Technology Resources

DAY 3

Using Integrated Skills Web Sites for Content and Language Learning

  • TASK 1: Browse Norris' "Technology Integration in Ten Easy Steps" and her "Projects Ideas Using Software and Web Applications." Read "Listening: Top Down and Bottom Up" (Morley).

  • TASK 2: In the next task, you will be exploring one of two excellent integrated skills Web sites: English Language Listening Lab Online (ELLLO) or Breaking News English. Before doing so, you may want to watch these informative videos. If you want to explore ELLLO, you can view these two videos (1 | 2) (Krauss). If you want to explore Breaking News English, you can view these videos. (Stannard).

  • TASK 3: Explore either the English Language Listening Lab Online (ELLLO) or Breaking News English. Both of these sites provide practice with a variety of language skills. Teachers can easily design extension activities to be sure all four English language skills are covered. Both of these sites have search boxes on the main page. I suggest you search the site for a topic that would interest your students and then explore one or more activities on the site that relate to that topic.

  • TASK 4: At Our Ning, click on the "Forums" tab. Click on "Michael's Discussion Assignments." Reply to my message, "ELLLO or Breaking News English." You will be asked to describe a specific activity you've chosen from one of the Web sites to use in your classroom and why you chose it. You will also share ideas for incorporating all four language skills and a final product into a lesson using the resource you chose.

Additional Information/Resources:
  • Teaching S.M.A.R.T. Workshop (Krauss) - This workshop presents resources as well as hands-on activities that will help you become successful in designing lessons that incorporate all four English skills as you present motivating content to your students.

  • ESL Independent Study Lab (Krauss) - Contains over 250 of the best Internet resources for ESL/EFL students. All Web sites are clearly annotated. Organization is by skill area and language level.

  • CALL-IS Virtual Software List - This collection of bookmarks, chosen and annotated by ELTs, has a uniform set of tags that makes it easily searchable. It will continue to grow in size and importance as colleagues from around the world contribute to it. You will need to join the Diigo group that hosts the resource list. Here is a short video showing you how to join and search the collection.

DAY 4

Problem Solving with Scenarios

Scenarios, a format used by Joan Berger, an Internet educational consultant, may be used with students individually, with cooperative groups, or as whole-class Internet lessons. This activity format poses issues to be explored or problems to be solved. There are teacher-made questions to guide the student and an Internet site(s) that serves as a resource to provide the needed information to complete the task. The student researches the Web site(s) provided by the teacher and reports (orally or in writing) after examining the problem. Joan keeps a "Scenarios Box", full of Sceario assignments, so that students can pull one out of the box and work on it at any time, using a computer located in the classroom.

  • TASK 1: Browse some of Joan Berger's scenarios so you understand how they are constructed. (Note: The links to the Web sites in the Scenarios are not all working, but you will get a good idea of how the Scenarios are designed).

  • TASK 2: Find a Web site and write a scenario of your own, complete with guided questions.
  • TASK 3: You will share your scenario with everyone. At Our Ning, click on the "Forums" tab. Click on "Michael's Discussion Assignments." Reply to my message, "Problem-solving with Scenarios."

Additional Information/Resources:
  • Internet Projects Registry - This registry is the one central place on the Internet where you can find projects from across the globe to bring into your classroom. This includes projects hosted by the Global SchoolNet Foundation, I*EARN, IECC, NASA, GLOBE, Academy One, TIES, Tenet, TERC, as well as countless outstanding projects conducted by classroom teachers from all over the world.

  • Web Learning Projects (Gaer) - Here are examples of projects done with ESL students of varying proficiency levels. Begin with motivating content (real-world task) and then incorporate the language skills needed to accomplish the objectives.
