Summary of Qualifications

  • Twenty-two years experience teaching English for academic purposes to non-native speakers, with consistently superior evaluations by students and colleagues, in the AES (Academic English Studies) department, Lewis & Clark College--retired from AES in 2007. Currently providing teacher training with the US. Department of State, Lewis & Clark College Graduate School (Continuing Education Instructor) and Concordia University (Adjunct Instructor).

  • Conduct student orientation and registration as well as develop, administer and evaluate placement test results.

  • Ongoing involvement in curriculum development and assessment with a focus on an integrated skills approach and content-based course development.

  • Specialized skills in CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) as a teacher, teacher trainer, software evaluator, materials developer and conference presenter, from the local to international level.

Classes focus on acquisition of linguistic, socio-cultural and study skills needed to successfully function in a university setting. Responsibilities include 15 hours of weekly classroom instruction, course development, student advising and committee assignments. Develop numerous content-based courses in areas such as Civil Rights, Controversial Current Issues, Law & Society and Computer Applications.

  • Computer Resource Person - Responsible for professional development materials and training of staff; maintenance and set up of hardware; research and purchase of software for departmental and student use; collection and organization of WWW resources; ongoing revision of departmental WWW home page; liaison to campus Information Technology department. Develop and teach on-line courses on integrating Internet resources into the classroom.

  • As Technology Trainer - Provide CALL training on both desktop and Internet-based resources. Regularly train teachers for the Graduate School of Education and Counseling (Continuing Education), Lewis & Clark College. Direct workshops for area public and private schools on a private contract basis. Have developed and implemented online courses, originally for U.S. State Department, now offered as well for the Graduate School, Lewis & Clark College. Work for U.S. State Department overseas as an English Language Specialist, most recently in 2008.

As a staff attorney, provided legal services to low income clients. Taught community classes explaining how people could resolve legal problems without retaining a lawyer. (Temporary position pending beginning of MAT program in TESL)

As a staff attorney, provided legal services to low income clients, half of whom were Hispanic. Coordinated an extensive community education program. Created materials for and taught numerous community classes on a wide range of legal topics. Advised migrant farmworkers of their legal rights during annual summer outreach programs to area migrant labor camps.
