This is what I knew about the author before reading Hatchet:

I had never known anything about the author "Gary Paulsen", but I had read many stories of other authors from the USA.

After reading Hatchet and completing my Internet research, this is what I know about the author :

His name is Gary Paulsen. He was born in May 1939. He is one of the most popular writers of young people in America. Although he was never a dedicated student, he developed passion for reading at an early age. He traveled with a carnival away from his home at the age of 14. When he was young, he worked on a farm. He later worked as an engineer, construction worker, ranch hand, truck driver and sailor. Also, he joined Alaska dog sled race for two rounds, about 1180 mile.

Paulsen's desire to become a writer came suddenly when he was working as a satellite technician for an aerospace firm in California. He quit this job and he worked in Hollywood as a magazine proofreader. Then he left California and drove to Minnesota. He rented there a cabin on a lake and he completed his first novel.

Gary Paulsen is a master storyteller who has done more than 175 books, some 200 articles and short stories for children and adults. He is one of the most important writers in the USA. His three novels are the Hatchet, Dogsong and The Winter Room.
