Hello. My name is Rie and
I came to the U.S.A. last summer. First, I lived in
Corvallis and went to the ELI (English Language Institute)
at OSU. The reason why I came to the U.S is that I want to
study nursing at OHSU (Oregon Health Science University). I
have already graduated from university and worked as a nurse
for 3 years in Japan. However, Corvallis is so far from OHSU
and it is difficult to get information about OHSU.
Therefore, I wanted to study here. It took some time before
coming here because I could not get the TOEFL score easily.
Also, I still need to get the TOEFL and GRE score and
nurse's license of Oregon that OHSU requires of
international students, so I have to study English hard. If
I am accepted at OHSU, I want to study pediatric nursing.
And if I can get the license as a Pediatric Nurse
Practitioner, I will go back to Japan and work as a nurse
again. There are only 3 nurses who are working as Pediatric
Nurse Practitioners in Japan now. My dream is taking care of
children who live with disease and to be supportive of their
families. I am not sure when I can get accepted at OHSU. If
you have good ideas for getting a high TOEFL score, please
tell me and help me. And if you feel sick, I may be able to
help you.
Rie Arai: The
Writer
If my writing is compared
to an animal, it might be a turtle. There is a story about a
race between a turtle and a rabbit. The fleet rabbit loses
to the slow turtle because the rabbit takes a nap along the
way. My writing is slow like a turtle but I am hard-working,
like the turtle in the story. The reason for my slow writing
is not laziness. I can start to write immediately, and I am
thinking a lot. Also, I have enough ideas because I am
mature and have many experiences-- like a turtle. So always
I want to tell and write a lot of things. However, I often
have the problem that I don't know how to express my ideas
in English. It is the reason that I am hard-working but
slow. Sometimes I gave up writing what I wanted to say
because I could not find the expression. At that time, I was
impatient with myself. I hope to be able to write an essay
more smoothly, and learn good writing skills even if my
progress looks like a turtle step. I don't hope to write
fast like a rabbit, but the least I want is to increase my
writing speed so it is like a sea turtle. I believe that
steady effort surpasses ability, so I will achieve my
goals.
