ISALC Internship
Positions
The Institute for the Study of American Language and Culture, Lewis
& Clark College, announces the opening of two internships in ESL.
Please note that the positions have different start dates and
responsibilities.
Position #1: Internship in English as a Second
Language and Community Outreach
The Institute for the Study of American Language and Culture
(ISALC) at Lewis & Clark College announces the opening of one
internship position with a starting date of May 10, 2000 or June
26, 2000 (pending availability of strongest candidate). This
position is designed for individuals who have recently completed (or
who have nearly completed) their graduate training in TESOL.
Appointment as an intern is for one year, with a possibility of a
second-year appointment pending enrollment and performance.
Appointments are limited to two years.
The intern position provides recent graduates an opportunity: 1)
to gain additional teaching experience in an established intensive
English program under the guidance of career professionals; 2) to
participate meaningfully on committees and in program development
initiatives; 3) to organize and coordinate extra-curricular
activities in the Portland community that will promote
international/intercultural awareness and understanding.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teach a two-thirds load (10 hours per week)
- Participate in ISALC committee work as assigned
- Coordinate with individuals, families and organizations in the
greater Portland community to promote interaction with
international students. Oversee the ISALC Friendship Family
program
- Participate in professional development activities
QUALIFICATIONS
- M.A. in TESOL/TESL in the current or previous year
- At least one semester of relevant teaching experience
- The ability to contribute positively to the program, and to
the community
CONTRACT TERMS
- 12-month/three-semester contract, renewable for second year
upon satisfactory performance and pending enrollment within the
ISALC
- Position begins in May or June, 2000
- Salary: competitive
- Benefits: package including medical & dental plans (with
partial employee contribution); travel and registration support
for local and state conferences

This position is designed for individuals who have recently completed
(or who have nearly completed) their graduate training in TESOL.
Appointment as an intern is for one year, with a possibility of a
second-year appointment pending enrollment and performance.
Appointments are limited to two years.
The intern position provides recent graduates an opportunity: 1)
to gain additional teaching experience in an established intensive
English program under the guidance of career professionals; 2) to
participate meaningfully on committees and in program development
initiatives; 3) to organize and coordinate extra-curricular
activities on campus that will promote international/intercultural
awareness and understanding.

- Teach a two-thirds load (10 hours per week) during academic
year
- Teach a full load (15 hours per week) during summer
session
- Participate in ISALC committee work as assigned
- Coordinate with Residence Life staff to organize, promote and
participate in International Awareness residence hall/campus
activities (5-10 hours per week) during academic year
- Participate in professional development activities
QUALIFICATIONS
- M.A. in TESOL/TESL in the current or previous year
- At least one semester of relevant teaching experience
- The ability to contribute positively to the program, to
residence hall life, and to the campus community
CONTRACT TERMS

- Benefits: optional residence in International Awareness
residence hall*; benefit package including medical & dental
plans (with partial employee contribution); travel and
registration support for local and state conferences
*The International Awareness hall provides opportunities for
students and staff from different cultures to learn from each
other. The intern would interact with undergraduate and ISALC
students, facilitate study/conversation groups, and work with the
Resident Assistant, Resident Director and the Programming Board to
provide social and cultural opportunities for hall residents and
for the Lewis & Clark community.
