Getting Started with Moodle - 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

Moodle is a web-based content management system that makes it easy for groups to securely interact, collaborate, communicate and share materials on the web. Moodle's focus is to support curricular classes, however, there are plenty of ways to use Moodle beyond the classroom as well. We'll introduce you Moodle and show you how to get started managing your own Moodle page

Designing in Moodle to Serve Your Syllabus - 9:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

You've put a lot of thought into the methods by which students will approach and engage with your material in the classroom. This workshop will explore strategies for building a moodle page that extends your classroom teaching style into the online environment, and that is integrated into the development of your course over the term. We'll look at ways of using moodle to stage and prepare for in-class activities, and for reflection and analysis after class. We'll explore the potential of thematic and project-based modules. Drawing from your and other participants' syllabi, we'll think through concrete scenarios of how you might use moodle to cultivate students' skills, knowledge, and habits of mind.

Adding & Managing Content in Your Moodle Course - 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

Moodle is a great way to deliver course content online. Articles and book chapters in word or pdf format, audiovisual files, even research data if it exists in a digital format, you can distribute it using Moodle.

Moodle courses are secure so only your class participants can access online content. This session will cover the ins and outs of adding and managing content files you upload, links that point to other web pages, and how to type (or copy and paste) directly into Moodle.

Collecting Student Work in Moodle - 9:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

In this session, we'll talk about different ways you can collect student work in Moodle. Moodle's Assignment activity makes completing, receiving, grading and providing feedback on electronically submitted assignments easy. Want students to share electronic files for peer review and group projects? Moodle's database activity, discussion forums and Wikis can be used for collaborative assignments. We can't cover everying in depth in one session, so in this workshop we'll dig into Moodle's assignment activity in depth, show some examples of using the database activity and discuss gotchas you may encounter however you choose to accept work electronically. Follow up with the Thursday sessions for examples and in-depth discussion on using forums and wikis!

Quizzes in Moodle - 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

Explore the versatility of Quizzes and the Question Bank in Moodle. Moodle Quizzes offer a variety of options for displaying questions, grading and security. You can customize your quizzes to allow students multiple attempts and determine whether they receive special feedback or see the correct answers (after they’ve taken the quiz, of course). Creating a quiz is a straightforward process once you have a question bank. Creating your Question Bank is just as simple, with a bonus: a single Question Bank can be created for all quizzes within the course and can be shared across courses.

Effective Discussion Forums - 9:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

When thoughtfully incorporated into your course, online discussions can successfuly extend the walls of your classroom and encourage student-to-student interaction. In this session, we'll show you how to set up discussion forums in Moodle, demonstrate some traditional classroom activities that can be accomplished through online forums, and discuss tips and techniques for structuring online forum assignments that both engage and instruct. Strategies discussed apply to online discussions in general and are not Moodle specific.

Moodle Wiki - 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.

While Moodle is often described as a "learning management sytem" that does not mean that it is a one-way communication medium. There are many tools in moodle that allow for interactive communication between and amongst you and your students.

In this workshop we'll focus on some of the ways you can use the wiki activity in your class. Wikis allow you to go beyond online text assignments to allow for assigments that can include multimedia content, links and uploaded files. Come see examples and learn how you can effectively introduce and use Moodle Wikis to support range of curricular activities in your classes.
