Free University is dedicated to promoting free exploration in a supportive, non-authoritarian, non hierarchical learning environment. In the process, we hope to strengthen the sense of community among Lewis & Clark faculty, staff, students, alumni, and neighbors. At Free University, we can learn for the pure pleasure of learning, without having the pressure of grades, exams or tuition charges.

Our offerings range from theoretical discussion groups to exercise classes to informal workshops. We hope to provide education that is active, experential, practical, intellectual, spiritual, and unconventional.

At Free University, professors can learn from students (and vice versa). Lowerclassmen can learn from the experiences of upperclassmen (and vice versa). Alumni can share their knowledge and continue to learn from Lewis & Clark in a relationship that extends well beyond their four years here. Our staff can feel like valued members of the learning community instead of "9-5" workers. And our neighbors will feel welcome to venture up Palatine Hill to join us in our varied pursuits.

The "free" in Free University means many things to many people. For some, it means no tuition; for others, it represents intellectual freedom; and still others see this freedom in spiritual or political terms. We at Free University hope that it can mean all these things... and more!
