Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Do I need to take the French Placement Test (FPT)?
  2. All Students are required to take one of the Foreign Language Placement Exams UNLESS:

    • You have fulfilled the Foreign Language Requirement because of AP or IB examination scores,
    • You have never studied a foreign language before,
    • You have studied a language at the college level and your credits have transferred to LC. In this case you may continue with the next course in the sequence you began elsewhere. Students who wish to transfer credit in a foreign language from another college or university whould NOT take the placement test.

  3. I don't have my Lewis & Clark e-mail address/account yet. What do I do?
  4. You need to create you LC e-mail account on the Web at: Account Management

  5. I have taken French courses in the past, including in high school. Do I still have to take a placement test?
  6. Yes, you are required to take the FPT unless you have filled the AP or IB exam requirement.

  7. I am a new student to LC. I have not taken any college or high school courses in French (I took four years of high school Spanish), but I recently spent two months in France. Do I still need to take the placement test?
  8. Yes, you need to take the FPT so you can be placed in the appropriate level.

  9. I'm an incoming freshman at LC. I took three years of French in high school and would like to take more in college. I am not planning on taking any French classes this school year. Should I still take the placement exam for the fall semester?
  10. Yes. It is highly recommended to take the test as early as possible for planning purposes.

  11. I studied more than one language in high school and would like to continue studying both (or all) of them. Should I take more than one test?
  12. If you have studied more than one language for which we give the Foreign Language Placement Exam and would like to continue to study both or all of them, take the placement exam in one of the languages and then contact a professor in the Foreign Languages Department for individualized placement into the additional language(s).

  13. What does the French Placement Test consist of and how long does it take?
  14. There are 60 (sixty) mulitple choice items and 4 (four) sentances to be translated. You have 60 (sixty) minutes to complete the test. You may NOT stop and return to the test once you have started.
