English 279: Classical Backgrounds
Course Description:
The primary literary genres of epic, tragedy, comedy, pastoral, and
lyric stem from the Greco-Roman tradition, and writers from Chaucer
to the brothers Cohen allude to its motifs and draw upon its models.
As readers of British and American literature, we therefore need to
know well the fundamental literary works of the classical tradition--works
that are much more than just “background.” Our goal will
be to gain an appreciation of these influential texts and of their lasting
power, the better to understand our own literary traditions. We’ll
consider the historical conditions that produced these works, but our
main focus will be on the texts themselves.
