Requirements
We
will be using a variety of formats, including lecture, small workgroups and
larger class discussions. It is especially important given the large size
of the class that everyone comes prepared for class discussion. The
success of debate in such a large group will depend on your energy and
enthusiasm. Periodically, the class will break into groups for debates
and other exercises. Reading questions and other class materials will be
available on the class website which can be accessed at www.lclark.edu/~eyoung.
Papers
You
will have to turn in a one-page typed response for three films that we see
during the semester. These will be due in the class following the
screening. You will also be required to write up a one
page outline for each of the debates, and a two-page outline for the
debate exercise for which you are responsible. These are due in the class when
the debate occurs. Guidelines for
these papers are online.
Exams
The
mid-term and final exams will include both a short answer and an essay
section. I will distribute essay topics to the class about a week before
the exam. In addition to the map quiz, I will periodically give you short
multiple-choice quizzes that are designed to encourage you to synthesize and
review your class notes and reading materials. Quizzes will be announced
ahead of time.
Participation
The
participation grade includes attendance, class discussion, and all other
assignments.
Late Papers
Late
assignments will result in a lower grade, usually half a grade per day late.
