Natural Resources: Electricity, Natural Gas and Heating, Water and Sewage

Footprint Group Report

Spring 2002: Malia Cahill, Courtney Dale, Chris Ragsdale, Kelly Stoecklein

Our group went over lighting in the bathrooms and how a lot of lights on campus were on all of the time. We also looked at the showers in the dorms to see how efficient they were. Some were better than others but low-flow showerheads should be installed. We spoke to facilities and they are on top of everything we suggested. We also looked a bit at energy used on computers. Many computers are left on all of the time. Screen savers are not effective for saving energy and it is better to just turn the computer off. We also looked at heating a bit. It turns out there are new boilers going into Copeland to make them more energy efficient. As it stands, Copeland has manual controls in all the rooms, and operable windows. In comparison Platt-Howard has a boiler system that operates on command, the individual rooms are not allowed to alter the heat. This way energy is lost through the act of opening windows.
