Guidelines for Submitting Manuscripts

Lewis & Clark doctoral students may submit papers for review by sending a completed manuscript to the director of the doctoral program at eda@lclark.edu, or by bringing an electronic copy to the program office in Rogers Hall, Room 308.

Every manuscript should contain the following:

  • Formatting the follows the guidelines established in the American Psychological Association (APA) Publication Manual. (An accessible summary is available here.)
  • Below the byline (author's name), please include your teaching affiliation, city, state, and email address; this should appear at the top of the article.
  • An abstract of no more than 150 words, also in the body of the article.
  • A full reference list, following APA guidelines for formatting and citing sources.
  • Any graphics in the article should be sent as separate graphics files (acceptable formats include .jpg, .tiff, or .gif -- but .pdf or .doc formats are not acceptable), clearly labeled with the number of the figure and the author's name (e.g, "Finnegan Figure 1.jpg"). The body of the article should clearly reference each figure, through statements such as the following: "As can be seen in Figure 1, the ratio of..."

Evaluating Manuscripts

Manuscripts we be reviewed twice annually (September 1 and January 1). Each submission is reviewed by three academic reviewers. The reviewers assess each submission on the following eight criteria:

  • The paper appeals to professionals and academics in the field of educational leadership.
  • The paper addresses important questions or propositions of value to the field.
  • The paper builds upon relevant bodies of knowledge and contains appropriate references.
  • The paper presents original ideas or results supported by compelling evidence.
  • The paper exhibits clear, concise, and accurate exposition.
  • The paper reflects careful attention to details.
  • The paper presents meaningful illustrations and examples as needed.
  • The paper adheres to accepted standards of style, usage, and composition.

All submitted manuscripts are given one of three ratings: ready for publication, recommended for publication with revisions, and not suitable for publication. The editors meet personally with each submitting author and fully discuss all the reviewers' comments. If an article is accepted for publication or recommended for publication with revisions, the editors provide the author with detailed suggestions for revisions and establish final deadlines for resubmission.
