Lewis & Clark-Area Bus Schedules

Ride Tri-Met to Lewis & Clark!

Portland's public transportation system is called Tri-Met. Its buses are safe, comfortable, and convenient. You pay as you board, and you must have exact change. If you are only traveling between two downtown points within the "Fareless Square," there is no cost. Otherwise, the amount you pay is based on how many of Tri-Met's three fare zones you travel through. For example, taking a bus to campus costs $1.25 from downtown. These prices include transfers good for two hours--the times are shown at the top of your torn off bus pass.

Monthly Tri-Met passes, subsidized by the college at a 50% rate, are available at the Law School Bookstore and Campus Safety from the twenty-second day of the preceding month through the fifth day of the present month. Books of ten individual passes (which are not subsidized) are available only at Campus Safety on the upper campus. Cash or check only, please.

Buses have numbers and symbols to identify what part of the city they cover. Bus drivers are friendly and will help you out with directions or other miscellaneous information. Tri-Met's Customer Assistance Office is downtown in Pioneer Square under the waterfall. For general information or trip planning, call 238-RIDE (238-7433) for 24 hour automated trip planning or 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. to speak to a live human. You may also plan a route or find out more details about Tri-Met by visiting their excellent web page at http://www.tri-met.org/

There are a number of ways to reach campus via Tri-Met:

All days: The #39 (Rose) route is a great way to get to campus. In fact, its name is the Lewis & Clark route. Catch it at the Burlingame Transit Center (where it originates) and take it to the intersection of Palater and Palatine Hill. The #39 leaves from the Burlingame TC on weekdays a whopping total of twenty-eight times between 5:42 a.m. and 7:40 p.m., and on Saturdays and Sundays seventeen times between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

M-F (day): Virtually all of Tri-Met's routes will get you to the two streets downtown that make up the Downtown Transit Mall; Fifth Avenue is for buses running south and Sixth Avenue is for buses running north. On weekdays, catch the #38 route. It leaves from Fifth Avenue and Oak four times between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., and seven times between 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Take it to the intersection of Terwilliger and Boones Ferry, at the northern tip of Tryon Creek Forest. From there it's a peaceful three-minute walk down a paved bike path and up the first gravel path on the left. The last #38 going back downtown can be caught at Terwilliger and Boones Ferry at 6:08 p.m. #38 may also be taken to campus from the nearby communities of Tualatin and Mountain Park.

M-F (7 am--11:30 pm): During the school year, Lewis & Clark operates its own free Commuter Shuttle, which will take you from the Burlingame Fred Meyer (where Barbur Blvd. meets Bertha Blvd.) to campus. Tri-Met routes #1, 8, 12, and 39 will get you there (but be careful not to take the #12 Express, which will take you to the Barbur Transit Center without stopping).

Bikes on the Bus: You may even ride your bike to a Tri-Met stop and load it on a secure rack on the outside of the bus when you board. Make sure you get a permit first. The permit is valid for life (unless you lose it).

Tri-Met Trip-Planning: Try out Tri-Met's Online Interactive Trip Planning. Also, the law library computer labs feature Tri-Met trip-planning software. Simply select your origin and destination from a comprehensive list or by zooming in on the map, and the software will automatically tell you which routes to take at which times, the total time for the trip, and the amount of required fare.

For general Tri-Met information or trip planning, call 238-RIDE (238-7433) or visit http://www.tri-met.org. Lynn Williams, the law school's Tri-Met Trip Planner, can also help you plan Tri-Met trips. You can contact Lynn, who is also the law school's Assistant Director of the Law Library for Reader Services, at 768-6760 or llw@lclark.edu.

The circulation desks at the law library and Watzek contain copies of Tri-Met's schedule book. This handy reference guide contains current schedules for every single Tri-Met route.
