Minutes

Monday, March 1, 1999, 2 p.m.

Present:  Bob Owens (Committee Chair), Eban Goodstein, Elaine Heras, Gene Wixson, Anton Andereggen, Jane Atkinson and Bonnie Okamoto, recorder

The purpose of this meeting is to update committee members on the Library Director search and for members to plan this committee's role in the interview process.

Eban Goodstein, Search Committee member, provided the following information about the search to date:

- Approximately 40 applications were received and subsequently screened by search committee members, with the top five candidates being selected.

References were checked through telephone calls using the same standard reference questions for each person.  One candidate was eliminated; four finalists were invited to campus for interviews.

- Brief information was provided about the four finalists, in the order of their interviews:

        David Chatham is currently Library Director at Bellarmine College in Louisville, Kentucky.  Prior to this, he was Library Director at Western State College of Colorado. He has a Masters in Library Science degree from the University of Washington and an  M.A. in English from Colorado State University. He has faculty status at Bellermine and has taught a first year student course.

        Joyce Davis is currently Library Director at University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.  She has a Masters in Library Science degree from the University of North Carolina and an M.A. in Divinity from Duke University Divinity School. 

        Richard Werking is currently Library Director at the Naval Academy and was formerly Library Director at Trinity University.  He has a Ph.D. in  U.S. History from the University of Wisconsin at Madison..  He is a professor as well as Library Director at the Naval Academy.  He has a great deal of experience and has done extensive publishing. 

        James Kopp is currently PORTALS Director (Portland Area Library System) and before that was Library Director at University of Portland.  He has a Ph.D. in American Studies from George Washington University.  He also has had experience working with a software company that developed library systems.  He has broad experience and has published extensively. 

Jane Atkinson provided a full set of application materials to be kept in the Library Director's Office for library staff and members of this committee to review.  A second set of application materials will be available in the Dean's Office in the Manor House.  Dean Atkinson also provided the committee with an update on the search and the four finalists.

Scheduling for the interviews was discussed:

- Eban Goodstein will be out of town for all but one Search Committee exit interview.

- Members of the Faculty Committee on the Library who will be available for interviews (Bob Owens, Anton Andereggen and Gene Wixson) will meet with candidates in the Heritage Room as follows:

        David Chatham           Thursday, March 4, 2:30 - 3:30 p.m.

        Joyce Davis             Monday, March 8, 3 p.m.

        Richard Werking         Friday, March 12, 2 p.m.

        James Kopp              Monday, March 15, 3 p.m.

- Members of this committee will meet with Jane Atkinson and Steve Beckham on Wednesday, March 17 at 2 p.m. in the Heritage Room to formulate and discuss this committee's recommendation to the Search Committee. 

- Elaine Heras added that library staff will meet with each candidate to ask questions specific to library concerns.

The meeting ended at approximately 2:45 p.m.
