Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at 3:30 pm.

Jack Hart chaired the meeting for Bill Randall. The committee decided to attend to urgent business only. This included a summer course proposal and two title changes to existing courses.

Course Proposals

97.84 Su98 FL 101 Beginning Slovakian (Instructor to be determined in consultation with Matej Bal University). O-S.

97.85 +GE Su98 IS 240 Survey of the History of the Slovakian People (Instructor to be determined in consultation with Matej Bal University). O-S.

97.86 +GE Su98 IS 241 Contemporary Issues in East Central Europe (Instructor to be determined in consultation with Matej Bal University). O-S.

The above courses have been approved by the International Studies Subcommittee and by David Savage for a one time offering during the summer. David Savage explained that this was an attempt to get more summer programs going and that Klaus Engelhardt would be leading the project.

Curtis Johnson suggested that if the college were to offer this program on a continuing basis the planning should be done in consultation with Paula Lytle.

Curt Keedy wanted to know if there was any language orientation for the program. David Savage answered that there was not but that there were other O-S programs that did not have such preparation either like the Kenya program. Curtis Johnson wanted to know if there were opportunities for students to follow up on the language. David Savage answered that there would be no opportunity to follow up on the language at L&C and that the goal of the program was to provide enough language orientation to live in and learn about a different culture.

Curt Keedy asked if this program would fulfill International Studies requirements. David Savage & Anne Price both answered yes.

Vote to approve these courses unanimous.

97.87 F98 Eng 200 Title change to: Introduction to the Short Story (Dawid). This course does not fulfill a Gen. Ed. requirement in Creative Arts because there is not enough writing involved (effective '98-'99). This new title is more consistent with the course description. Vote to approve unanimous.

97.88 F98 IA 237 Title change to: Development: Problems and Prospects (Tallian, Eder, Peck). The word "development" better represents the broad aims and the content of the course that essentially deals with the underdeveloped, semi-developed and developing countries across various continents. Vote to approve unanimous.

Meeting adjourned at 4:00 pm.

Next meeting will be Jan. 14, 1998.
