ACADEMIC COUNCIL

MEETING MINUTES

 November 24, 1998

Announcements:

Dean Dodds noted that the upcoming Dance Extravaganza is expected to sell out very quickly.

Dean Dodds shared that there is a great sense of appreciation and increased confidence in the department budget process now. Dean Jones, in particular, was very pleased to hear this. She is available to help all divisions with budget matters. It's important that the department chairs review their budgets once per quarter. Each department received a first quarter report and was asked to submit a draft budget for 1999-2000 by December 10th.

Dean Johnson said that the IA Search Committee has decided to extend an offer to Steven Lambo; Dean Atkinson has approved their recommendation.

Dean Johnson said there were some questions from the recent chairs' meeting regarding summer session salaries. Dean Jones assured the group that there is a new summer session salary plan being unveiled after the Thanksgiving holiday. Dean Johnson also asked if there is a plan to hire a director for summer sessions. Dean Atkinson said that eventually a Director of Special Programs will be hired; it is uncertain at this point if the position will report to CAS because of the development work involved with the job.

Each department chair in the Social Sciences division is calling two colleges to survey how other institutions are conducting assessment. There is particular interest in Willamette University as a possible model.

Dean Atkinson reported on the Enrollment Management Team's ideas for fine-tuning the process of recruiting, awarding and retaining students. There is a strong consensus from the Team and the Board of Trustees, that the Lewis & Clark web site needs to be updated to become searchable and interactive. Another positive recruiting tool that Dean Atkinson foresees is the inclusion of financial aid award letters with student's letters of acceptance. The recent Academic Fair got good reviews; the faculty definitely draws good students. There are two upcoming faculty phonathons. The Dean's Office will send out a reminder of the dates.

Dean Atkinson mentioned the very recent change in the campus parking policy that came as a result of board action. There will be a flat $100 per semester per car fee, regardless of the number of riders. Members of the carpool will work out the details.

Dean Dodds said there needs to be clarification on the Parking Policy in regard to certain small groups, such as adjuncts and musicians who are on campus for brief periods of time.

Dean Johnson brought up usage of the Pamplin Room. Students would like access to it as a haven to study; installing bookshelves would allow them to leave study materials in the room. Dean Atkinson thinks this can be accomplished, although it may need to be in a place other than the Pamplin Room. She would also like to see the rather isolated office for the Director of Academic Awards move closer to the students.

Agenda Items:

  1. COMMITTEE FOR SALARY POLICY REVIEW: Dean Johnson said that the Social Sciences' chairs did not express strong interest. Dean Atkinson said that it doesn't need to be acted upon this semester. Dean Dodds expressed concern that the gap in the salary scale is widening. The Arts & Humanities chairs think that the junior faculty should be represented, and that there should be an elected committee. Citing the bylaws, Dean Atkinson stated that the Faculty Council is the appropriate body to address such issues.

  2. DEVELOPMENTAL REVIEW COMMITTEES: All assignments are not finished, but Dean Johnson did have some to report on. Dean Atkinson advised that the committee membership not be overly departmental.

  3. FAT LUNCH: Dean Atkinson asked for topic suggestions of general interest to everyone. Suggested topics were: overseas leadership, and accommodations for LD students.

  4. FACULTY MEETING: A resolution to modify the Academic Integrity Policy will go before the faculty at their December 2nd meeting. The resolution would require that all alleged cases of academic dishonesty be brought to the board (it's currently optional). Resolution information will go out in the mail on November 25th.
