Announcements:
Candidate Howard Gillman is being interviewed today for the Pamplin Chair of Government.
Candidates for the ethnomusicology position are interviewing on campus this week and next.
Dean Keedy said that the Mathematical and Natural Sciences chairs have agreed to discontinue the 135 Consolidated Calculus course.
There was a brief discussion regarding the degree to which a department should offer specialized courses as opposed to foundational courses. Faculty differ philosophically; some academic areas have very little in specialized courses while others offer many.
Agenda Items:
1. Dean Atkinson said a case has come to her attention regarding a student who has 100 credits toward his major out of the 128 required to graduate. She wondered how many faculty are unaware that under the new curriculum, there is a 60 credit limit for courses in any major.
2. The Council reviewed a cost analysis for 1998-99 sabbaticals. A brief discussion resultedl on the consistency of CAS adjunct faculty salary rates and how competitive they are in relation to peer institutions. An inquiry will go out to the 7 College Council of Deans for comparison rates.
3. Dean Keedy said that if the M&NS searches are successful, there will be 3 faculty in the sciences needing start-up funds.
4. The Council reviewed LC student applications for USA Today's Academic Team. 60 top college students are chosen nation-wide to receive $2500 prizes and national coverage on their accomplishments. Jeremy Brown, Steven Chan and Bryan Cutler will represent Lewis & Clark in the competition.
