Academic Council
Meeting Minutes
November 7, 2000
Present: Curtis Johnson,
Dean of the College; Dinah Dodds, Dean of Arts and
Humanities; Gary Reiness, Dean of Mathematical and Natural
Sciences; Harry Schleef, Dean of Social Sciences; Terri
Banasek, administrative assistant and recorder; and Rosie
Felton, administrative assistant for budgets and contracts.
Guest: President Michael Mooney.
Long-Term Topics
- Faculty Searches: There are currently 17 searches,
including the Islamic studies position. Normal costs for
travel are $500-$1,000 to bring three candidates to
campus. There is some flexibility in costs for housing
and food, and additional savings can be found in airfare
if there is enough lead-time. The total cost target
figure is $3,500 per search.
The divisional deans will speak with chairs to determine
how the departments plan to replace faculty going on
sabbaticals or on overseas programs in order to get some
idea of costs for those searches.
- Summer Research Grants and Rogers Scholars: The
Academic Council agreed to keep the level of spending the
same as last year for the student/faculty research grants
and Rogers Scholars' programs. This is a valuable
experience for students and should be encouraged.
It was noted that there will be considerable start-up
costs for new faculty next year.
- The question was raised as to what extent the College
funds non-office computer equipment. The Academic Council
will discuss policy at a later meeting.
Agenda Items
- Search Committees: The Academic Council agreed with
the recommendation that a law professor serve on the
Pamplin search committee. Dean Schleef will speak with
the committee, emphasizing that the law school
representative would not be a voting member of the
committee.
- President Mooney reported on the financial state of
the College.
