Agenda Items:

Theatre position. There have been several conversations about the position description for the tenure-track search in Theatre. After many discussions about the criterion for tenure for an appointment in the arts, the Council agreed that their goal is to hire someone who will be able to participate widely in the college community, teach in Inventing America, serve on committees, perhaps one day chair the department and engage fully in the culture of the faculty. They wanted to make sure the distinction between a lectureship and a tenure-track position was clear. They will convey this message to the search committee.

The discussion continued on what will constitute “scholarship” in this case. Does it mean publication? Dean Dodds said that it is expected there will be for a mix of creative activity and scholarship; perhaps an occasional publication, along with performance reviews by outside reviewers. In order to clarify the distinction between a lectureship and tenure-track position as well as the intended balance between creative activity and scholarship, it was agreed that there is a need to draft some language articulating these expectations for the successful candidate’s tenure review, such as, “a reasonable balance between creative activity and scholarly work.”

The Council reviewed the position description for an assistant professor of earth science (geology). The position was included in the Mellon Foundation grant and will be funded by the grant for the first five years. The home department is still to be determined. The position description was approved with minor changes.
