Approved 10/23/97
The minutes of the September 25 meeting were approved as corrected.
Agenda Items:
1. The spring start date for 1999 was the subject of further discussion. The faculty was divided, with a strong preference for January 11 over a January 18 start-up. Dean Atkinson will deliberate further with the registrar and president.
2. The deans discussed the agenda for the October 20 breakfast meeting of the College of Arts & Sciences department chairs. The president will join the meeting to resume the conversation regarding faculty titles, begun in the recent faculty meeting.
3. Associate Dean June Jones will send a letter to all CAS faculty next week to solicit course proposals for Summer Sessions '98. In addition, proposals for summer overseas programs will be considered. The two 6-week summer sessions will be: Session I, May 11 - June 19; and Session II, June 22 - July 31.
4. The Council reviewed the Student Disability Policy and Student Disability Grievance Procedure intended for institution-wide use. The policy was revised by Dale Holloway and June Jones, with input from the deans of each school. The policy will be posted for faculty feedback on the governance page of the CAS Dean's web page. The policy will go before the Dean's Council soon for its approval.
Dean Keedy said that most problems in accommodating disabled students in his division are with lab access for physically disabled students. The College has constructed lab stations in two chem labs for easier access. On occasion, it is necessary to reschedule classes to rooms with wheelchair access.
