Lewis & Clark College

Academic Council

Meeting Notes

August 8, 2000

Present: Curtis Johnson, Dean of the College; Dinah Dodds; Dean of Arts and Humanities; Gary Reiness, Dean of Mathematical and Natural Sciences; Harold Schleef, Dean of Social Sciences; Terri Banasek, Administrative Assistant and recorder; and Rosie Felton, Administrative Assistant for Budgets and Contracts.

Announcements:

  • Secretarial support for Curriculum Committee: Kathy Anderson has agreed to serve in this capacity. Dean Schleef noted that this position involves a considerable amount of work in addition to the department secretary's normal responsibilities. The Academic Council agreed to monitor the workload and to consider another person if needed.
  • Dean Reiness reported that the Louis Kuo has been contacted by George Fox University. The University has an open position in physical chemistry and has 10-12 students who need to take a 300-level physical chemistry course to complete their graduation requirements. They have requested permission to bring these students to Lewis & Clark to take the course here. The George Fox students would be taking the lecture only and not participate in the lab. This class normally doesn't fill to the cap, with 15-18 students in the fall and fewer in the spring. George Fox would be billed for the tuition for their students. The Academic Council suggested additional work-students to help with grading, if necessary. The Lewis & Clark instructor would receive no additional compensation for teaching the George Fox students.
  • Dean Dodds said that adjuncts in the music department, who are paid by the lesson, have suggested an increase in fees from $320 to $360 for 45-minute lessons. It is too late to do anything for this year. Dean Dodds will research what other schools charge for private lessons.

Agenda Items:

  1. Waseda Exchange: Waseda is a very large and prestigious university in Tokyo. For many years, Lewis & Clark hosted a summer program to enable Waseda students to study in the U.S. It was a program involving faculty and students from seven Oregon schools, housed on the Lewis & Clark campus, which focused on comparative culture.

In November 1999, Dr. Mooney received a letter from the president of Waseda asking the College to enter into a new arrangement. The exchange would allow from one to three Waseda students to study a Lewis & Clark and also allow from one to three Lewis & Clark students to attend Waseda. A full-year program, this could be a very attractive option for overseas study for majors or minors in the Foreign Languages Department and for East Asian Studies majors and minors.

Dr. Mooney seeks advice from the Academic Council. He is reluctant to proceed, as the last program did not have much faculty support. Dean Johnson will speak with Larry Meyers about the program before the Academic Council makes a decision.

  2. ACE Conferences: Dean Johnson distributed information about upcoming conferences on chairing departments for the divisional deans to share with their department chairs. The College would fund one attendee per division.

  3. Booklists: There are a number of courses that have no booklists in the bookstore. The divisional deans should contact faculty regarding the booklists for their classes. All the faculty members have to do is to send their syllabus to the bookstore. This will give the students the choice of purchasing their books on campus or going elsewhere. Some faculty members may not be aware that the Barnes & Noble contract with the College calls for faculty to provide them with lists.

  4. Director of Information Technology: The Academic Council agreed that there should be faculty representation on the search committee for this position. The Education Technology Committee should also be represented. Dean Johnson will recommend to Jane Atkinson that she appoint faculty members to the search committee. Suggested possibilities: Jens Mache, Erik Nilsen, Jeff Ely, and Stuart Kaplan.

Next meeting: September 5, 2000, 9 a.m., in Dean Johnson's office.
