ACADEMIC COUNCIL

MEETING MINUTES

May 11, 1999

Announcements:

Dean Atkinson reported that first year student enrollments for fall 1999 are expected to be 480-490; enrollments including transfers could reach 587.

Dean Johnson reported that Robert Goldman has been selected to chair the Sociology Anthropology Department for the next three years.

Agenda Items:

  1. The Council agreed to meet on May 24 to make salary decisions for the next two years. Dean Dinah Dodds will join the group.
  2. Environmental Studies enrollments are growing. Options to meet the demands might be funded from a Mellon grant proposal, currently being drafted.
    • Bring in a post-doc to teach and coordinate advanced research
    • Ask for 2 to 3-year support for a new TT position in geology/geophysics
    • Conduct a one week emersion in Washington D.C. during winter break to study process of setting environmental policy. (There was some concern that this might take away from regular DC enrollments.)

Note: 1) Law school willing to take seniors with high GPAs into some of their classes; 2) Physics looking for a geophysicist, could knit that department's vision for Mellon proposal; 3) Dean Keedy will contact PSU geology department for tips on recruitment.
