Roger Nelsen reply. There was a brief discussion about
the proposal from Roger Nelsen to make changes in the
sabbatical policy. It was agreed that the current policy is
a generous one and increasing the opportunity for faculty to
be away from campus would exacerbate the problems with an
already tight staffing schedule. The Council will draft a
response to Professor Nelsen.
Allowable Terminology for CAS Catalog. A message from
Judy McNally prompted a conversation about the terminology
used in the catalog to depict the frequency of course
offerings. During the revamping of curricula in preparation
of the semester conversation, certain standards were set for
consistency and clarity. This year two departments,
Chemistry and Physics, submitted non-standard terms for this
purpose. The Council made decision to change the text to
conform to the standards.
There was a discussion of procedures for the selection of
outside reviewers, used for CAS faculty in the promotion and
tenure reviews. The Review document says, As part of
the evaluation for promotion or tenure the divisional dean,
after consultation with the department chair or surrogate
and the faculty member under review, shall solicit external
reviews of the faculty members scholarly or creative
activity from recognized scholars within the faculty
members discipline. These reviews and the names of the
reviewers will be confidential unless the College is
compelled by a legal action to make them available. On
occasion, the selection results have been questioned by the
Committee on Promotion and Tenure. At the request of the CPT
and to clarify the process for future deans, Dean Atkinson
and the Academic Council will draft a memorandum of
understanding with more clearly defined guidelines.
