Academic Council
Meeting Minutes
March 29, 2005
Present: Curtis
Johnson, Dean of the College; Stephanie Arnold, Dean of Arts
and Humanities; Gary Reiness, Dean of Mathematical and
Natural Sciences; Harry Schleef, Dean of Social Sciences;
Mervyn Brockett, Assistant to the President; and Terri
Banasek, Administrative Assistant and recorder.
Announcements:
- Dean Arnold announced that 17 members of the Lewis
& Clark dance program attended the Northwest Regional
American College Dance Festival; the group was one of
only eight selected to perform in the gala.
Agenda Items
- Jane Atkinson has asked to be invited to Academic
Council soon to discuss some findings that came up in
working with the Diane Crabtree and Michael Sestric about
available classroom and lab space. Academic Council
agreed that she attend the next meeting (along with Diane
Crabtree and Michael Sestric) and requested a summary for
review prior to the meeting.
Dean Johnson said that NITLE will be meeting at Lewis
& Clark in late May, and Dr. Atkinson has asked for
names of one-two faculty members who could join her and
Dan Terrio to discuss issues regarding technology in the
classroom. Suggestions: Ken Clifton, Greg Hermann,
Isabelle DeMarte, Jens Mache, Rich Peck, and Margo
Ballantyne.
- Dean Johnson reported that there is a national
psychology conference being held in Portland, and the
psychology department would like to make available slots
for any interested students. The cost is $40 per
student, and there are 20 who are interested in
attending. The department is willing to contribute $400
and has asked Academic Council for the other $400. Dean
Schleef will see if this can be covered out of the
divisional budget.
- The only opportunity the Academic Council will have
to meet with the candidates for Dean of the College is
during the meeting times with faculty. Given the fact
that the dean candidates should have some understanding
of the current administrative structure, Dean Schleef
asked about the status of the proposed restructuring.
Dean Johnson responded that everything he has heard in
the faculty is that they are in favor of the change. We
need to get an affirmative statement from the majority of
the faculty, and the only time this can be done is in
April. Dean Johnson envisions that a proposal will be
made and explained and that the faculty will be asked to
approve it after adequate discussion. The faculty would
authorize someone to go through the bylaws and make all
of the necessary changes in language. Those changes
would then be brought before the faculty for
approval.
Next meeting: Tuesday, April 5, 1:30 p.m.
