Meeting Notes

May 2, 2000

Agenda Items:

Spanish staffing. The Foreign Languages department has asked permission to have an adjunct instructor teach 4 courses next fall rather than the normal full-time adjunct load of 3 courses. This would be an exception to the Overload Policy. The request was approved with the stipulation that future requests would need to be approved by the Council on a case-by-case basis. There is precedent for approving this request. The council approved a similar request earlier in the year from another Spanish language instructor who taught a 4-3 overload. It was further stipulated that during the semester when the two faculty members in question were teaching 4 courses, they would not teach at any other institution. There are currently two tenure-line positions in Spanish, with a proposal under consideration for a third.

Business Econ major and John Wish proposal. How do we want to support credit-bearing internships? Do we want to lean more heavily on the Center for Service and Work to initiate internships as non credit-bearing experiences? John Wish has submitted a proposal recommending internships be managed by faculty as part of their teaching load. If there are large numbers of students interns, it would be an efficient way to manage them. Dean Johnson will speak to Harry Schleef about the department’s opinion.

Music Chair Update. Dean Dodds reported that Gil Seeley and Stephanie Arnold are expected to come forward with a proposal for a .5 FTE position for a facilities manager to support the efforts of the Music Department. It could possibly be combined with the existing Theatre Department’s Shop Foreman position to create a full-time position. The person would maintain facilities and equipment such as musical instruments and oversee the theatre during the summer.
