ACADEMIC COUNCIL
MEETING MINUTES
April 30, 1999
Announcements:
Dean Atkinson announced that Cyrus Partovi was chosen as Pamplin
Professor of the Year by the Pamplin Society of Fellows.
Agenda Items:
- The Council discussed the current draft proposal for the Keck
Foundation and made suggestions for changes and additions. Dean
Keedy said it is widely acknowledged that students learn best from
hands-on research. The grant is geared toward the LC initiative to
draw students to and keep them interested in the sciences--a
difficult task, not only here but nationally.
- The Council approved a draft policy and procedures for dealing
with scientific misconduct, recently mandated by the Dept. of
Health and Human Services. Deans Keedy and Jones modified a model
policy and procedures for responding to allegations of scientific
misconduct as it appears in the ORI Handbook for Institutional
Research Integrity Officers. The Misconduct in Research policy
will now go before the Executive Council for their approval; a
summary will be included in the 1999-2000 Faculty Handbook.
- New Faculty Orientation. The Council discussed plans for a new
format for faculty orientation in the fall. New tenure line
faculty are now being salaried beginning August 15. This change
has been made to ease the pressures of relocating and to give us
an opportunity to better prepare new faculty for teaching at LC.
The NFO will take place over a three day period (probably half
days). Ideas for workshops include: Writing, Speech, Classroom
Teaching and Faculty Review.
