MEETING MINUTES

April 8, 1999

 

Announcements:

The Psychology search committee has an offer out to Ryan Kilmer, who interviewed on campus last week.

The International Affairs Symposium took place this week and Dean Johnson reported it to be a smashing success. It is a very busy time of the year and many people were unable to attend, but there were enough students who attended to fill the Council Chamber.

International Affairs is interviewing over the next two weeks to fill the tenure-line position vacated by Mine Eder.

The Physics search committee has made an offer to Steven Tufte, an astronomer.

Senior bio-chemistry major Dan Meliza has received an NSF Graduate Fellowship.

Dean Keedy said that the MNS faculty are working on a proposal for the Keck Foundation.

Notification came from the Luce Foundation that the LC proposal entitled American Enlightenment submitted for the Henry Luce Professorship Program was eliminated in the second round of competition.

 

Agenda Items:

  1. Dean Savage said that Chiu Mi Lai has formally requested a leave-without-pay during 1999-00, with the expectation she would return in 2000-01. She has requested a personal leave with no expectation of benefits. Professor Lai would assist with finding a replacement. The leave was approved.
  2. Dean Atkinson reviewed the current thinking on a 7-Year Capital Plan to be presented at the May 21 Board of Trustees meeting.
    • Law School: Office, teaching & library space. Construction to start Aug. 1999.
    • Social Sciences Building: 50,000 sq. ft. space, 2-3 stories, footprint same as FOB and Throckmorton buildings. $15 million.
    • Residence Life: Four-50 person halls, one built per year over next four years. Interspersing houses with current open spaces.
    • Convert the Platform to a Student Art Center this summer ($75K).
  3. The Council reviewed the list of vacant department chair positions for the 1999-2000 academic year.
  4. There was a discussion regarding academic advising loads. It was agreed that there must be a limit on the number of advisees. Dean Atkinson will speak to Kristi Williams about a maximum of 40 or fewer.
