Announcements
- Dean Johnson reminded the Academic Council that
Family Weekend is February 28-March 2. Events start
Friday afternoon at 5 p.m. with the book launching in
Watzek Library. There is a breakfast on Saturday morning
to which faculty are invited. He encourages faculty to
attend and to RSVP to Sandi Bottemiller. The
International Fair is also on Saturday, March 1.
Agenda Items
- Sandi Bottemiller distributed the proposed NSO and
Parents Preview Faculty Schedule. It is very similar to
last year's schedule. The revised advising schedule went
well last year. Regarding the advising pilot, it will be
expanded to include 160-200 students, with half based in
Inventing America sections and half in other first-year
courses. Ms. Bottemiller will work with Angie McGinnis
on the schedule for letters to students to facilitate
combining Inventing America faculty section for the
advising pilot student with residence hall assignments.
NSO will not be taking students off-campus for the day on
Sunday as was done in the past few years. Because the
Sunday event will be held on campus, Ms. Bottemiller is
hoping for more faculty participation.
Regarding the math placement exam, Ms. Bottemiller stated
that the College needs to be more clear with students
regarding expectations and when they should take the
exam. The exam needs to be ready to go on the Web as
soon as students receive the notice; this was not the
case last year. Dean Fredricks and Ms. Bottemiller will
check with Sue Benowicz to ensure that the exam is ready
to go for this summer.
Ms. Bottemiller will check with Dell Smith to confirm a
May 20 due date for divisional advising materials. She
also noted that many of the Inventing America sections
last year were very successful. She will check with Ben
Westervelt to see if he wants to do it again this year.
- Dean Johnson received an email from Dan Terrio
expressing his concern about the fact that the faculty
don't seem to know who he is. Dean Johnson noted that
this is another example of the perceived division between
faculty and the administration. He noted that Mr. Terrio
is doing a good job - his office interacts well with
faculty and is very responsive to faculty needs. Dean
Schleef suggested he meet with departments. There is a
need for faculty to become educated about new technology.
How is IT prepared to address this?
Dean Fredricks also suggested that Mr. Terrio needs to
make himself more visible. Dean Johnson will invite Mr.
Terrio to an upcoming faculty meeting and ask him to say
a few words about issues in IT.
