Academic Council
Meeting Minutes
October 22, 2002
Present: Curtis
Johnson, Dean of the College; Dinah Dodds, Interim Dean of
Arts and Humanities; Greg Fredricks, Interim Dean of
Mathematical and Natural Sciences; and Harry Schleef, Dean
of Social Sciences; Terri Banasek, administrative assistant
and recorder; and Rosie Felton, administrative assistant for
budgets and contracts. Guest: Mike Sexton, Dean of
Admissions.
Agenda Items:
- Academic Council reviewed the revised memo to faculty
concerning guidelines for granting sabbatical leaves.
The language was approved with minor changes. Dean
Fredricks will contact Dean Johnson with additional edits
before distribution of the memo.
- Mike Sexton reported to the Academic Council that he
has not received responses from several departments
indicating the faculty who will participate in the
November open house. In addition, Dean Sexton
distributed to the divisional deans lists of classes, by
department, that are available for visits by prospective
students. He noted that there are several department
that have very few opportunities for visitors and asked
the divisional deans to alert the chairs to the problem.
Interested faculty should forward the information about
their classes to Solomon Enos in the admissions
office.
- Both the sociology/anthropology and art departments
are in the process of drafting language for departmental
review charges.
- Dean Johnson received a letter from Keni Sturgeon
proposing a minor in museum studies at Lewis & Clark.
Academic Council agreed that there is no interest in the
proposal; Dean Johnson will respond to Ms. Sturgeon.
- If there are candidates for the USA Today and Glamour
Magazine scholarships, names should be forwarded to
Robert Eisinger.
- Dean Fredricks reported on the Mathematical and
Natural Sciences division discussion of the Diversity
Task Force Report.
- Opportunity hires: This is a great idea, but this
is not a good time to move forward because of the
current budget situation.
- Minority Dissertation Completion Fellowship: The
chairs expressed more interest in this recommendation.
If the College could offer these fellowships when
departments are trying to replace people on sabbatical
or overseas, it might be financially feasible - not a
department looking to fill a vacancy.
- Diversity Guidelines: The College does need to
strengthen and improve guidelines, but the chairs were
leery about the dean being able to cancel searches.
- Exchange Programs: These are a good idea.
- The chairs also talked about informally seeking
out minorities at professional meetings.
- Dean Johnson reported that he has asked Greg Walters
to look into the Minority and Women Doctoral Directory.
He found that the publication is fairly thorough in
including minority candidates in their registers. Mr.
Walters pointed out that if the College hopes to attract
minority candidates for faculty positions, it should be
proactive. Academic Council approved ordering the
rosters for chemistry, English, German, music, and
philosophy, at a cost of $395. The divisional deans need
to be sure the chairs of the searches use the
rosters.
- Dean Johnson asked the divisional deans to discuss
the Web Advisory Task Force recommendations with chairs,
reminding them that this document was drafted by faculty.
There is a clear and strong message in the
recommendations that every faculty member should create
and web page and actively maintain it.
Dean Fredricks noted that the Public Affairs and
Communications staff have been slow in responding to
requests for help. Dean Johnson will contact Kari
Chisholm to let him know that the faculty is ready to
move forward with this initiative and is in need of
support.
Academic Council discussed whether money could be taken
from print publications created for the admissions
department to more web-based marketing and staff support
for its creation. Dean Johnson noted that this issue is
on the agenda of the Identity and Marketing group.
Next meeting: Tuesday, October 29, 2002, 9:00 a.m.
