ACADEMIC COUNCIL

MEETING MINUTES

February 9, 1998

Announcements:

Dean Savage announced that Alan Cole, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies, recently received a Graves Award. The awards are intended to reward "outstanding accomplishment in actual teaching in the humanities by younger faculty members." It is the first time that Lewis & Clark has submitted a name in nomination for the award. Cole will use the award to extend his one-semester fall 1998 sabbatical through spring of 1999.

Dean Keedy said that an offer is still out to a candidate for the animal physiology position in Biology, and the second Biology search (animal behavior) committee has identified three strong candidates for interviews.

The computer science search has narrowed its field to 4; invitations to interview on campus will be extended soon.

The economics department search committee currently has an offer out to Cliff Bakkar from Simon Fraser University.

Dean Atkinson said she expects to hear soon whether Howard Gillman, the political science department's candidate for the RB Pamplin Chair in Government, will accept the College's offer of a tenure-track position.

Dean Atkinson reported that there was an accident on the London program this week. A student was hit by a car and received a broken arm and some bruises. The student's mother is flying to London soon to be with her daughter.

Diane Durston has been hired to fill the position of Ford Grant Coordinator, formerly filled by Margy Robinson. Dean Atkinson said that Durston has many connections in Japan and the Japanese art community in the U.S. and, therefore, will be helpful in the college's international programs.

There will be two concerts this week honoring Professor of Music, Vincent McDermott, on the occasion of his retirement. The concert will feature musical scores written by McDermott and his former students. Also this week, there will also be a series of lectures and a concert sponsored by the Pamplin Society of Fellows and the Lewis & Clark Department of Music entitled: Music's World Visionaries.

Deans Keedy and Atkinson will meet with Mike Sexton soon to solicit his assistance in strengthening the recruitment initiatives of science students to the College.

The search is underway to replace retiring Registrar, Anne Price. Applications are due in by March 6, and it is hoped that the position will be filled by late spring. A search committee is being formed now by Associate Dean June Jones.

Dean Savage asked when the Council would be reviewing this year's capital equipment requests. Jones and Atkinson will look at the budgeting process at the institutional level and set an appropriate date for the submission of the requests soon.
