Meeting Notes

January 22, 2001

Present: Curtis Johnson, Dean of the College; Dinah Dodds; Dean of Arts and Humanities; Gary Reiness, Dean of Mathematical and Natural Sciences; Harold Schleef, Dean of Social Sciences; Terri Banasek, Administrative Assistant and recorder; and Rosie Felton, Administrative Assistant for Budgets and Contracts. . Guests: Mervyn Brockett, Vice President of Budget and Finance and Treasurer; and Robert Nayer, Director of Operating and Capital Budgets

Announcements

  • Joe Waters has accepted a position at San Diego State University.
  • Dean Johnson announced Admission's Faculty Phonathon coming up in the spring. This is an important connection for incoming students that faculty should take seriously.
  • Dean Johnson reported that the $4,000 fee per case proposed by Franco Capriotti includes only the first phase. The second phase would cost an additional $2,000, but it is not always necessary. The Council agreed that the College will retain Mr. Capriotti for the first phase and will reevaluate for the second phase.

Agenda Items

  1. Faculty Retreat Planning Committee: Dean Johnson will speak with Tom Schoeneman to determine whether the Commission on Teaching would be interested in planning the agenda for the Faculty Retreat.

  2. Developmental Review deadlines: Academic Council extended the deadline for developmental review committee reports to divisional deans from February 5 to February 20.

  3. Phased Retirement: Full status for phased retirees will include use of their computer, office space (depending upon availability), and eligibility for regular sabbatical leaves (at a rate based on their retirement salary) and travel funds.

  4. Forrest Pierce has requested updated equipment and another workstation for the composition studio. Academic Council recommended this be a capital equipment request.

  5. Computer Replacement Plan: The departments need to begin the process of determining needs for next year, including printers. Dean Johnson will inform IT of the new procedure. Dean Dodds will build in to the existing plan a flexible budget for emergency needs and a pool of computers for use by visiting faculty. This would amount to approximately $10,000 and could be assigned a capital expense project number.

  6. Academic Sampler: Academic Council suggested that each department host an open house in their own department, perhaps doing a 20-minute presentation. This would also add substance to the campus tours.

  7. Facilities is running air quality tests for Fir Acres, but no results are in.

  8. Islam position: Dean Johnson received another request for the position to be converted to a tenure-track position. Academic Council agreed to continue with the three-year term appointment, noting the ongoing discussions of such matters in the Commission on Academic Priorities.

Next meeting, Monday, January 29, 2001.
